What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
Discussion for current and prospective students about social life at university, societies, what stationery and bedroom items to buy and anything else relating to life as a university student.

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?Well that's still something. I don't know anything about Aberdeen really :/(Original post by .snowflake.)
I know where the uni is, where the O2 academy is, and have been recommended a decent pub. This is all I know about Sheffield. I can bake however.
Same! but I don't want to risk making anything for the first day everyone moves in... -
Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni? When I was a subwarden in University Halls we would recommend people propped their bedroom doors open when they were inside so that people could say hello. If you're in first, maybe you could offer to help your flatmate carry something from the car (you would get off to a good start).(Original post by britchick)
So you've arrived at your university, you've unpacked all your stuff into your new accommodation room, your parents have said goodbye and left (if they accompanied you), you've shut the door and you're sitting on your bed in silence.
WHAT ARE YOU MEANT TO DO?!
Guys I need some good ideas/advice. At this rate I'm going to be wondering around my room aimlessly, hairdrying chicken hanging from the ceiling like Howard out of Fresh Meat.
Start of term; Party, Get Sha**ed by the older years and Party some more. -
Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
I'm quite a shy person, keep everything to myself, don't like stepping out my comfort zone, but I'm sick of it and will be doing everything. Saying hi to everyone I meet, do everything I can, be active every second I can.
It's a fresh new start, be the person you want to be as you'll eventually meet the people you like to be around. -
Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni? This sounds exactly like me. It really is a chance to reinvent yourself to who you want to be. Have fun, because I know I did!(Original post by Enigma7)

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?I agree. My friends flat broke out the vodka the first night in their flats. I Couldn't do it.(Original post by miss_colourful)
I personally won't be using alcohol to break social awkwardness...if you can survive that first social awkwardness you are obviously meant to be friends for life. XD
Plus, you wont wake up knowing that you Were only confident because of a substance. Knowing everything you did said and the fun you had was 100% original you.
Maybe that's weird of me, but I think of that. -

I will be in my flat a good week before the rest of my flatmates anyways...so I have time to leap on them when they come in
I'm going with tea I think or maybe some non-alcoholic punch that looks just about drinkable

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
I haven't started yet, but I know that I intend to party hard during the first week every night, and my flatmates better be up for it as well!
I will socialise with my flat mates during the day, and try and talk to as many people as possible that I see around. Hopefully in the evenings we can sit around the table in our accommodation and get to know each other while doing drinking games.
When I go out clubbing at night during the first days, I'm going to party hard - but for me that doesn't mean getting excessively drunk, just drinking enough so that I am more open and confident, I also find it way easier to dance after some drinks, I always feel embarrassed when I try and dance whilst sober. I'm going to try and socialise at clubs and get to know people, try and exchange numbers etc. -

There's not kettle in my halls and I'm the first to get there...so I'll be generous and buy a kettle!! That way I can meet my best friend XD
Rereading that...it sounds really sarcastic
It's not meant to I swear!!! I am totally serious.

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
No need to worry about socializing in the halls of residence. I am literally one of the most socially awkward people ever who didn't drink. I was 22 (most people are 17-20 ish) when I went into the halls. I had NEVER been away from home, I only had a small group of friends at home and I was terrified. In fact I made such a fuss prior to going that by the time I got there my nerves had been so shot I wanted to just curl into a ball and not come out of my room. Once my parents left me my flatmates all popped around my door and said hi and instantly I felt better. I think a lot of pre-freshers get themselves overly worried about being disliked but it is seriously hard to be disliked unless you act like an ******** and don't involve yourself with anybody. My first few days of Uni = going out, meeting people and then going for my welcome week for my course. It'll be fine all the new guys/girls going to Uni you'll have some of the best times of your lives in the halls/freshers and if you don't it's not the be all and end all

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?(Original post by icecoolwas)
I think this is going to be a huge test for me, since I don't drink at all because of my religious beliefs, and it seems everyones going to go out and get hammered.. I'll push the boundaries and go to a few clubs, which again is prohibited, but I will not drink.. I'm always up for some shisha though! I just hope theres a good mix of people from different races and stuff at my uni, or I don't think ill culturally fit in..
oh and stop being wimps and don't worry about any awkwardness, it will subside shortly after I guarentee it. Go with the flow, use your childhood friend making skills, its not even hard to make friends, everyone did it when they were 5 year old!
P.S - Avoid nerd talk, computers, gaming etc atleast on the first day, or you'll end up giving the impression that your a geek, and thats a no no.
Sweet Jesus i'm studying Computer Games Development!

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?LOL Really don't worry about that please ignore what the other poster said. You will find there are TONS of people you'll meet in the halls and at Uni in general who have the same interests as you. I love games and talked about it openly at freshers and I wasn't a social pariah for it. In fact I made great friends though that shared interest and we had many gaming sessions in other flats it really was a lot of fun and a good ice breaker.Last edited by Jiyeon; 07-08-2012 at 02:44.
