no, you do not talk about these things when you first meet your room mates. All you have to do is leave your bed room door open, while you unpack, just so you see people's faces and say hi at least. When you're ready go out and introduce yourself, preferably as soon as you see them, do it so you seem confident and sociable.

You should talk about vain things when you sit in a group with all your house mates, and just get to know them. Ask about where they're from, course they're doing etc. Then after a while, ask if they want to go out.

None of that BS with drawings and posters and schedules!

    edit: lol neg away bitches.

Aha I know once I get some drink in me everything will be fine, but I'm really shy around new people, and the first meeting of new people makes me feel really awkward and this is all of that to the extreme! D:
I know how you feel completely, I felt exactly the same last October! But remember pretty much everyone is feeling nervous, just be nice (obviously your not going to horrible) and ask where they're from, what subject they're doing and let conversation flow from there hopefully but on the drinks front I'd Definitely recommend not getting too drunk especially on your first night, you don't want to be embarrassed and shy in front of your new flatmates

Makes my plan of brownies/chocolate crispy cakes look rubbish
I wouldn't say no to brownies. But then I'm a fan of all bakery products. Blueberry muffins as well *drools* But I'm going to be right in there covering as much of my walls as I'm allowed (only allowed to put posters on an area which is half the area of the floor, it's bizarre) with posters and pictures and stuff, and then go out and harrass people, try and figure out how to get round the whole "18 is the legal drinking age" fiasco as a 17 year old. Anyone else going to UEA and going to be 17? I need allies!!!

This is going over my desk because it makes me laugh.

For a group of seemingly smart people on TSR there are a surprising amount of people who never seem to grasp sarcasm whatsoever.

If my flatmates don't vote for me as Flatmate Queen (ballots will be handed out after a couple of hours once we've got to know each other and discussed my own eating preferences etc.) I literally won't know what I've been doing wrong.
My ballot papers are going to be attatched to my poster on the door, I'm hoping the subliminal messaging will get into their subconscious and get them to vote for me because I'm putting in so much effort

I don't care who you are, nobody is going to say no to being my friend when I whip this out.

I just hope it survives the journey in the car.

    Death by E-Numbers.
Hell yes. My flatmates will be in a complete state (especially if I made a guiness cake as well, which is a beautiful and glorious creation) and I'd just walk off whistling "Non, je ne regrette rien..."

I'm gonna break out of my shell and just knock on peoples door and introduce myself. That's the best thing to do.

Or better still, knock down ginger :teehee:
Yup that's definitely the best approach although you want to make sure you get the right person - when I moved in it was an extremely hot and sunny day and I went to knock on one of my new flatmates door which was already open and there was some one standing by the window with her back turned to me, so I decided I was going to be confident and I walked a bit into the room and introduced myself and asked her name, turned out it was the girl's grandmother ( I use the excuse that it was incredibly sunny and that I couldn't quite work out the age of the person and that family it turns out had ridicuously good genetics, her mother looked like her sister) but anyway it was a little bit awkward after that but luckily the actual flatmate found it hilarious and it was a great ice breaker

I'm so excited for having walls I can decorate  I think I'm allowed posters over pretty much all of my room because the walls are painted bricks rather than plaster :awesome:

Haha, yes! My friend actually got a cake decorated with rainbows and smiles (which was a little terrifying) for her birthday this year, it was fantastic.

I want to break the ice and get to know the "neighbours" but I don't want to come across too keen/a weirdo.

    Spoiler:
    Show
I asked my friends what they thought if I left my door open and invited others to come for tea and biscuits  and to get to know each other. They said I would be known as the freak from the very first day... Not exactly what I want if it can be helped.
To be honest, if I saw tea and biscuits I'd be right in there. I'd probably even go the extra mile and do a spread of homemade cakes... But that's just me i.e. a loser can't be helped.

You lucky thing! I'm just going to make do in the first year, cover up as much of the walls as I'm physically allowed to, and then I'm hoping I'll be able to completely cover the walls in second year if I find a flat (failing that, I'll do some pretty crayon drawings on my cardboard box and draw a garden outside it in chalk) and then I'll just go slightly crazy. I love posters and pictures and things, I can't help it.
