Maybe look around for a large meeting place like a university canteen or cafe (or library for those checking out the facilities and getting straight to the business). And try signing up to lots of extra clubs and activities to meet people of a similar interest which will make it a lot easier talking to people!
Thanks don't get me wrong I'm really excited. Just nervous as everyone is - just have to really force myself into situations I may find quite scary at first and see if I can cope :P

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
From what I remember, our move in date for halls was a week before classes started. So basically 'freshers week' consisted of meeting my hall mates (not everyone arrived on the move in date), sitting in the kitchen area a lot and discussing where we were from, what A-levels we'd done, what degree we were doing, how nervous we were about the first lecture etc. Then we'd go out to town at night or go to flat party or sit in and chat in the kitchen.

I seem to recall going to 'uni' during that week but it wasn't actual uni stuff (no lectures or seminars). Basically I had a 'freshers timetable' to go to events like 'collect my student card', 'go to library tour' etc and optional stuff like freshers fair where you basically get given free t-shirts, sweets, condoms, tesco vouchers, pens etc etc. There were other things - I distinctly remember being sat in the student union sharing a bag of crisps with a complete stranger (freshers week has loads of those moments) and we were all waiting for something, can't remember what though, I know it felt important at the time.

Basically, you'll have a wishy washy timetable of things to do/places to go before lectures start the week after, between doing that stuff you'll be getting drunk, reciting your A-level subjects a million times to loads of people who think it's somehow interesting/relevant (so did I at the time) and sharing sweets with strangers who might end up becoming your best mate.

    Have fun!

Ah so do I! I really like my second choice, it's just the fact that it isn't a proper University puts me off But the grades are so high on my first choice! I'm panicking if you can't tell haha! Thank you, and you too! Ahhh well I would suggest you try it, it is actually really nice! But yeah, is one of those 'hits you all of a sudden' drinks!
What are your first and second choice if you don't mind me asking? Don't worry just revise and stay calm, getting too stressed out makes everything so much worse when your feeling panicky and nervous. I might give it a go then but not have too many, I'm always wary of drinks where I can't taste the alcohol at all because I'll just keep drinking them!

I wouldn't say no to brownies. But then I'm a fan of all bakery products. Blueberry muffins as well *drools* But I'm going to be right in there covering as much of my walls as I'm allowed (only allowed to put posters on an area which is half the area of the floor, it's bizarre) with posters and pictures and stuff, and then go out and harrass people, try and figure out how to get round the whole "18 is the legal drinking age" fiasco as a 17 year old. Anyone else going to UEA and going to be 17? I need allies!!!

This is going over my desk because it makes me laugh.
I got all excited because I'm going to UEA, but I will be 18. Sorry
    I love the poster though

To be honest, if someone had made tea and biscuits I wouldn't be turning them down

I'm just hoping the alcohol gets broken out as quickly as possible...

It's definitely a lot easier said than done, but just forcing yourself to be sociable is definitely what you have to do. In year 9 we moved to Canada and I had no choice but to force myself to talk to people from the very first day - the later you leave it/more hesitant you become, the harder it is to make friends as people will have gradually started to form their own new friends by the first couple of weeks. Think of it as starting year 7 all over again! Except these could be friends that you keep for the rest of your life!

I really wouldn't worry about it,I know it might seem daunting but once people start drinking and socialising it's really great and you'll make lots of friends
Then lose them all after Freshers' Week.

Can I ask what you all mean by "communal area"? Is this like the canteen or some sort?
Also I'm not really super extroverted or anything but I would rather go out and try to make an effort i.e. being one of those people to "pop in" than wait around in my room for someone to do the same
In non-catered halls, the communal area is just the halls.

I did the yr7 experience twice when I moved 200 miles south in yr8 - not keen on doing it again! :P - and definitely not as bad as a move to canada! I'll definitely try my best, but anxiety is a real disorder and it's stupidly debilitating at times (not implying that you were saying that it wasn't) I'll have to call on all the tricks therapy taught me but thanks for the advice - ill keep it in mind come September

If you're leaving your door open, keep facebook open, attract people to your room with a potential frape

Until someone frapes you saying "I am a weird freak which everyone is making extra special effort to avoid at all costs."

Then the frape doesn't seem like such a good idea anymore.

I'm already at the University of Leicester, hopefully going into my second year ( I find out on friday if I've passed but I'm pretty confident I have ) I heard Sussex is great and oh wow really the Brit school! Well I hope you get your A, just keep going over things your not confident on, try and teach some family member or friend and I found that if I kept writing things over and over it helped, but also when your in the exam you'll be surprised just how much comes flooding back to you under the pressure!

I'll forgive you. Just hoping I can find 18 year olds willing to take my under their wings so I don't spend the first term sitting outside drinking cream soda and eating skittles alone because I can't get in anywhere.

It's a brilliant poster, I need it.

Well I wish you all the best in your exams and I hope you get to Sussex haha I'm confident I'll be back for another year but there's always some small doubt. Well it sounds like your preparing plenty so hopefully the exams a nice, straightforward one, I hate it when I see an exam question and It's unclear what they're asking
