Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillDo you though? Many in Northern Ireland don't like the idea of the Union Jack or the concept of Britain. How will the UK government imposing a flag on Northern Ireland be any different from the Union Jack being imposed upon them as the flag of all the various nations of the UK? Any flag that accompanies this Bill will simply be seen as a symbol with what is wrong with the union by Northern Ireland. Let the Irish people decide their own flag in their own parliament.(Original post by xXedixXx)
Do you have no understanding of the issues in Northern Ireland? -
Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillI would have thought that the Irish Nationalists would be happy that the UK Government has decided to stop imposing the Union Flag upon them and has gone for a sensible and apolitical option for the country's flag.(Original post by toronto353)

Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillSo the UK Government stops imposing one flag upon the Irish only for them to start imposing another? That's where my problem lies with this Bill. It doesn't change anything. It's still the UK Government imposing their will upon the Irish.(Original post by xXedixXx)

Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillMy friend, you seem to have lost sight of the nationalist grievance. It's not the imposition of the Union Flag or the Ulster Banner that was the problem but the imposition of a flag by the British full stop. Hence the dislike of the saltire of St Patrick which is hardly a "British" symbol. We should not be in the business of imposing flags and anthems on anyone.(Original post by xXedixXx)

Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillIt doesn't pander to anyone; that's the point.(Original post by Steevee)
Why exactly do you want a flag that in any way panders to the sepratists/republicans? -
Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillWell it does rather, going for the 'uncontraversial' option is clearly pandering to those republicans that are left. I see no problem with the Ulster Flag to be honest.(Original post by xXedixXx)

Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillAh but it's kinda bland and looks like the English one.(Original post by Steevee)

Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillLooks better than the proposed new one(Original post by obi_adorno_kenobi)

Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag Billbecause a minority want independance? by that logic shouldnt we have the flag of pakistan or such?(Original post by xXedixXx)
Do you have no understanding of the issues in Northern Ireland? -
Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillNope, it's the English, Scottish and the Kingdom of Ireland flag. I don't know why the ROI, as the natural successor, didn't retain the flag.(Original post by Lipvig)
Would this not affect the Union Jack, as it is a mixture of the English, Scottish and Northern Irish flag?
The Northern Irish flag is very similar to the English flag: -
Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillYou wouldn't see a problem with it but a lot of people find it very offensive.(Original post by Steevee)

Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillYou answered your own question. Why would the republic maintain the monarchical flag?(Original post by A Mysterious Lord)
Nope, it's the English, Scottish and the Kingdom of Ireland flag. I don't know why the ROI, as the natural successor, didn't retain the flag. -
Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillYes, Republicans, and we shouldn't pander to them.(Original post by xXedixXx)
You wouldn't see a problem with it but a lot of people find it very offensive. -
Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillSo you'd rather make the situation worse? Righto'.(Original post by Steevee)
Yes, Republicans, and we shouldn't pander to them. -
Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillA flag will make it worse will it?(Original post by xXedixXx)
So you'd rather make the situation worse? Righto'.
-
Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillNo, not really.(Original post by xXedixXx)
Yes a lot worse. You see this shows your total lack of understanding of the situation in Northern Ireland and it's really quite worrying.
I think what it shows is a little hope on my part that the majority of Republicans aren't the ass-backward PIRA sort. If they are, bugger them. Republicans are the minority, and a country should have a flag that represents the country, not have a flag that panders to those who want to destroy it. -
Re: B462 - Northern Irish Flag BillMainland UK imposing a flag on the Irish would make the situation worse as well, but you don't seem to admit that.(Original post by xXedixXx)
