Kent Uni 33 overall but 15 for econ in rankings?!
I was wondering, do employers look at the overall prestige or look at the department rankings too.
A good example would be to compare Southampton (15 overall, but economics 18)
I would also like to hear personal experiences of the University itself- Kent.
Thanks,
OD -
Re: Kent Uni 33 overall but 15 for econ in rankings?!So if you had offers from Southampton and Kent you'd pick Kent?(Original post by Tateco)
They won't take much notice of either. They will have an opinion which they have formed over years of experience and the, changing one place here or there in an inaccurate ranking system won't change their mind about it. -
Re: Kent Uni 33 overall but 15 for econ in rankings?!I'd pick Southampton, it is better for economics IMO.(Original post by Obscenedilemma)

As it is a forum, with lots of different people I was hoping to get another response. They may have a different opinion.Last edited by Obscenedilemma; 15-06-2012 at 08:37. -

Southampton is the more 'known' universities, even for Economics. -
Re: Kent Uni 33 overall but 15 for econ in rankings?!
An employer does not sit there with a league rankings. Especially since they change every year and your course is 3 years long. So, you know.. In general they only really matter in a few top of the ladder places, but even then it's mostly Oxbridge, UCL, etc. that they take into account. An employer would probably look at Southhampton as more "prestigious" but it is unlikely someone would get picked over someone from Kent purely because of their university.
Go to whichever you prefer the look and feel of. Rankings will change every year, generally it will always be Oxbridge, UCL, Imperial etc. > Everything else. Everything else is pretty much on the same level, so few employers will care.
University rankings mean **** all, unless you're at the top. Both universities are excellent, that is without a doubt. However they are not comparable to the very top, but other than that if you put in the effort and get the relevant work experience and knowledge, you can be just as comparable regardless of where you go. -
Re: Kent Uni 33 overall but 15 for econ in rankings?!But how so if the evidence conflicts this?(Original post by *Hakz*)
This, OP.
But surely if it's more prestigious then the employer would be more likely to hire the grad from the more prestigious Uni? + I was thinking of Essex for PPE, they've got an amazing politics department but again... same dilemma- low in overall ranking, high in Poli(Original post by Xhotas)

Re: Kent Uni 33 overall but 15 for econ in rankings?!Essex isn't low in rankings at all. And in the "prestigious" case, only if the CVs were EXACTLY the same - which is very unlikely.(Original post by Obscenedilemma)

League rankings mean nothing. No employer is going to sit there with 3 different league tables, comparing which uni is better. If you're CV is dependent on which university you went to then your CV is pretty crap to be honest. You should go to a university that you love and feel at home with. Leagues change every year - who knows where your uni will end up by then. Don't take that into account. -

You may want to check your sources:

Kent is highly underrated, I have no idea why, it's amazing for a vast number of courses. I think it has a stigma attached that because it's Kent University, it can't be very good, however I know for my course (Forensics) it's No.1 in the UK.
I can't speak for Southampton, but I love Kent, it's got exceptional teaching facilities, it's in a beautiful city (Canterbury) and I like it very much. One of my old school friends started at Nottingham, didn't like it, and I showed him round Kent. He's now finished his first year here

Wow... I've just realised how volatile the rankings are! I don't know why I was placing such an emphasis on them. And well done to Kent!
