Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable. It was only a bloody joke!(Original post by Logi)
Why bring party politics into this?
Every government will have incompetent people who make mistakes and every government wants more power over the people it governs. This legislation represents a line that should not be crossed and should be opposed regardless of your party political affiliations. -
Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable.Nothing, all though it's not an every day occurance so I doubt it will happen again!(Original post by madders94)
And what's to say the Tories won't do the same?

Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable.
Terrorism, terrorism, peadophiles. Be scared, you are in danger, everyone is out to kill you or rape your children.
To protect you we need to know who you are communicating with.
*******s, the people we need protecting from are the very people pushing this through, and eventually the people that will benefit from the information (corporations).
But hey, at least our children wont get buggered and we wont get blown up. -

Politicians love slandering those with objections to controversial schemes.
Object to body scanners = terrorist
Object to CCTV = thief/rapist
Object to immigration = intolerant/racist/xenophobic
Object to work experience/workfare = communist
Object to ticket barriers in stations = fare dodger
Object to speed cameras = speeder -
Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable.
At present there is an ongoing enquiry into underhanded and invasive methods employed by the media, leveson enquiry. It explores the procedures and tactics used by various members of the media to gain information relating to personal information, ongoing criminal investigations, high profile cases involving military deaths, child abduction etc, and political figures conversations with peers. These methods have been deemed highly invasive of personal privacy and have caused a great deal of upset for all those involved.
At the last count I was informed that the checking of data bases and files for details of all those who had had their phones tapped, emails tampered with and internet activity logged may take at least 2 to 3 years. In ond data base alone there was over 3000 entries and they have several thousand data bases to search through. As it turned out several more have been uncovered so the time limit may continue for several more years.
The tactics of the media in gaining information while searching for the scoop on a story and inside information have been lambasted by various politcal figures, including several prime ministers and Teresa May herself.
The policies put forward are simply on a level playing field with the tactics employed by the media only on a much greater scale.
I am all for catching and preventing sex offenders and terrorists, but I do not believe the information gained from this will help to do that in the big scheme of it. It is more likely to target the average person and to gain information on the general public, much like a more detailed census.
Anyone who has ever had their privacy invaded especially by phone tapping and email tampering, most of all during times of emotional stress when they are more likely to discuss personal matters would be disgusted by this policy. Believe me, it's not nice to be told that some total stranger has listened to you talk with friends and family during what already is a vulnerable time. -
Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable.I assume they need to record everything because they can't retroactively record this information. For the same reasons CCTV cameras record you shopping regardless if you're stealing or not, the information is gathered indiscriminately.(Original post by Logi)
By here I meant the internet. I should have been clearer. If they don't care about that information then they don't need it. They can continue with the current system where they are able to trace the activities of those they suspect of being involved in illegal activity so long as they have a warrant. There is absolutely no need for them to create files on every citizen.
You didn't answer my question as to whether you'd be fine with that person with the notepad following you by the way.
The reason I might not have answered your question is because I didn't see why that particular analogy matches up with the proposal. But I don't think that matters because my answer would be a qualified "yes", but that would be on the basis that it's actually useful for the price it would cost to run - a criteria I think Theresa May's plan would fail. -
Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable. How can you value your privacy this little? At what point would you say the criminals and terrorists have won if it's not when you have your own personal stalker? Maybe if they inserted a camera up your arse? How about life in a prison cell to prevent anyone misbehaving in the first place? Mental...(Original post by Piprod01)

Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable. The joys of a politically correct government trying to justify its invasion of privacy by telling us its for our own good and safety. ****ing pathetic.(Original post by A Mysterious Lord)

That these things might be recorded in a database somewhere doesn't really phase me because:
1. Computers are non-judgemental.
2. The chances that anyone would even look at those logs would be next to null.
3. Even if they did they wouldn't know me personally.
If a system is this impersonal I struggle to feel any invasion of privacy. -
Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable. What happens if someone hacks into that data and releases it, and masses of private information is no longer private?(Original post by Piprod01)

All serious criminals on the internet have everything pretty much untraceable back to them and sensitive information encrypted . So storing the information won't help unless the criminal was complacent, in which case they could have been caught without spending so much money.
But hey, at least they are stopping all those terrorists who are blowing everyone up.
How many terrorist attacks on the UK have there been in the last few years? There can't be that many that we have to give up more privacy to protect us. -
Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable.
FFS, this is the sort of policy the New labour would do, the front row tories and front row labourites are a bunch of career politicans and party by name only *******, whatever happened to the criticism of the "nanny state" eh?
Someone needs to put a muzzle on May. -
Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable. You must mean bitcoins and the darknet. Some weird stuff on there.(Original post by Pitt1988)
So true! If they are going to go about shutting down or monitoring anything online it should be the 'black' internet or whatever it is called. The place where you can buy women, drugs and guns with poker chips. Not the internet that the majority use for communication, education and entertainment.Last edited by DeanG; 16-06-2012 at 02:49. -
Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable. These are are reasons why I think Theresa May's plan is ineffective, and for the price it would cost it's just too much. Security of information is another very real concern.(Original post by DudeRugs)

Re: Theresa May all critics must be pedophiles or mentally unstable.
Man this is BS, hope it doesn't get through.
Also dumb question as I'm not that techy but people are saying how paedophiles/criminals have some basic knowledge could probably get around this. Could they control computers remotely, sort of like in those bot-net systems, and end up causing an innocent persons computer to download child porn and seed it or something?
Suppose we'll see if it ends up like school filters, you're trying to search something forbidden for a piece of work. So in this case if someone doing a degree is doing some sort of assignment/diss on sexual deviance or what ever, or someone is looking for case studies for a report (hell even a governmental department could do this), basically a legitimate reason to be searching keywords which would be linked to being a paedophile, do they end up with a knock at a door because they've searched for "child pornography" "extreme child abuse" etc? Nothing to fear unless you're guilty right? It's lucky no one has been sent to prison when they're innocent.
