Second Year: What is it like?
I have just finished my first year and now have my results

How is second year different to first? Do you have any advice for working well/efficiently? Getting good marks? etc

    Thanks

Of course that depends on the uni and the course. For me (Politics at Lancaster) it wasn't that different than the first year. Markers are a bit harsher because in the second year you're expected to write better essays etc. What I can advise is that you should do your reading regularly so that you don't have to study ****loads for your exams at the end of the year.

Second year was a fairly big step up for me. Workload increased in terms of coursework, but mainly in difficulty! Plus the fact that it now actually counts to your degree!

Do they start to take referencing and bibliographies a bit more seriously? This year, when I got my coursework back, they made comments about incorrect referencing but I wasn't penalised for it? Thanks!

They probably will start to focus more on your referencing - my referencing was shockingly bad in first year and it wasn't ever picked up on but in second year they started to comment on it in the hard copies of essays, plus a 'good referencing' section turned up on the assessment criteria

    Thank you

I think my referencing was correct, but some of the sources I used (being a languages student) were quite old books, written by linguists that perhaps aren't that well known, and didn't carry a place of publishing etc so maybe the fact that some of my sources were not complete in my bibliography was an issue? not sure .... I'm just glad I got through first year and can move onto second! :woo:

It varies place to place, for us the references alone can be up for 30% (ish) of the total mark of the assignment.

Workload increased, and if your working part-time as well you won't go out as much by far. But its only natural, i'm now going into my third year and part-time work is getting dropped so I can concentrate on my dissertation + exercise

I know a lot of people that got 'second year blues' and a lot that dropped out especially around christmas, when it feels like you'l be stuck in a lecture hall forever and a day and its never ending!
