Pots, Pans, Kettles what do i ACTUALLY need??
Just a quick one in terms of all your kitchen stuff..
in my halls that im (hopefully) moving into in september they already have a microwave and the cooker and fridge and stuff but you do need your own pots pans, kettles, toasters etc..
Did everyone currently at uni take all this with them OR did they wait til they got there and saw what other people had brought then nipped to asda or something and brought whatever people hadnt got?
I just dont want to buy everything and end up with 5 kettles that we will never use!
Also how many plates and cups and everything did everyone actually need ?
(trying to work out how much im gunna need to spend on everything!)

Re: Pots, Pans, Kettles what do i ACTUALLY need??I found the people in my flat on fb, and we organised who bought the kettle/toaster so we didn't end up with 5 of one and none of the other! Re: Pots, Pans, Kettles what do i ACTUALLY need??
When I moved into halls for my 1st year, luckily each student got a starter pack (our own pots, cutlery, washing up liquid, etc.) so we were set, with one of the girls buying an extra kettle because there was only one in our kitchen which housed 13 girls.
If you know ahead of time that the starter pack ain't happening, then these are very useful (especially on an individual/independent basis):
- - Big/small pot and frying pan.
- - Baking tray. You usually can't deep fry in halls, so things like chips, etc. will mainly be oven baked, so trays are essential. Helps for other baking needs too and you will always have it available for you.
- - Big plate, small plate, cereal bowl and rice/pasta bowl (Some can be bought when you get there, as you could agree with others to buy sets and then share)
- - Mug, and drinking glass.
For halls I found that toasters and kettle are shared and really a max of 1 or 2 of each or the kitchen was sufficient, and cutlery is rarely bought individually so either pack like 2 forks, knives etc. of your own recognisable cutlery, or see if everyone shares a huge set of that once you arrive.
Some other essentials include:
- Can opener
- Spatula and big spoon - to use when cooking
- Chopping board
- Cutting knife
- Foil, cling film, baking tray paper. -

Re: Pots, Pans, Kettles what do i ACTUALLY need??I think it's fine to share anything that doesn't need washing up (kettles, scales etc.) between flatmates. Anything else leads to arguments.
As an absolute necessity, you'll need:
- Wok - non-stick. It's deep enough to boil water for pasta etc. in, and the non-stick aspect means it can be used as a frying pan
- 1 plate (doubles as a chopping board), 1 bowl, 1 mug
- 1 knife, 1 fork, 1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon
- Small sharp knife (doubles as a vegetable peeler, although there's a knack to it)
- Silicone spatula - for stirring stuff and getting the last bit out
- Pyrex bowl - for mixing stuff, and as a oven-proof dish for things like pasta bake
- Tin foil - doubles as a disposable baking tray.
- Tupperware - so you can make >1 portion and eat it another day
Ideally, however, you'll have
- Small saucepan, big saucepan, frying pan, wok
- 2 plates, 1 bowl, several mugs
- Packet of cheap cutlery (Ikea does a set of 16 for about £1.50 - no point spending much because you'll only lose half of it)
- Small sharp knife and some way of sharpening it
- Silicone spatula
- Measuring spoons, electronic scales (no need for a measuring jug, because those scales will measure whatever it is in ml)
- Pyrex bowl, oven dish
- Tin foil (baking trays are a sod to get clean anyway)
- Tupperware
- Cheese grater -
Re: Pots, Pans, Kettles what do i ACTUALLY need??From your 'absolute necessity' list, I managed to disregard 4 items. I don't think you should portray your "knowledge" as infallible - it's misleading.(Original post by Origami Bullets)

From your 'absolute necessity' list, I managed to disregard 4 items. I don't think you should portray your "knowledge" as infallible - it's misleading.
I am, like everyone else on this forum, an individual student with their own opinions, experience and knowledge, and people are free to heed or ignore anything that I say.

Re: Pots, Pans, Kettles what do i ACTUALLY need??Which 4? I can see how you could manage without the tupperware if you don't plan on doing much cooking (although they're always handy for storing stuff e.g. if you only use half a tin of tomatoes) but the rest strikes me as pretty essential. And I think that list was really helpful and not misleading in the slightest.(Original post by Formerly Helpful_C)

I'm not saying the list won't be useful, but to categorise them as 'necessities' is misleading. -

, the wok was the only pan (doubling up as saucepan and frying pan), and it isn't going to stay non-stick long without the silicone spatula.
And I can't believe I'm spending my weekend discussing this.

Re: Pots, Pans, Kettles what do i ACTUALLY need??
I was going to leave the kettle until I got there (already a toaster there) but one of my flatmates already has one so she'll be bringing that. I asked my boyfriend about the pans and plates issue, was it really necessary for there to be 73445 plates and cutlery and 2345 pans in the flat? "Yes." He said things go missing, people get lazy with washing, things get broken and "it's just nice to have your own stuff". So I'm going along with my assortment of pans and box of plates just like all of my other flatmates, it seems!

Re: Pots, Pans, Kettles what do i ACTUALLY need??I think the most important thing is not to take anything that you will get upset about if it gets broken/lost. However careful people are, stuff does get broken and if it's something you really like, it makes it worse. Plenty of years to have your nice stuff when you live on your own(Original post by JessChappers01)

Re: Pots, Pans, Kettles what do i ACTUALLY need??Ditto what accomoffice says, plus the pyrex bowl allows you to bake stuff that is sloppy (e.g. pasta bake), and the tin foil lets you cook things like pizzas and frozen battered fish. And it also doubles as a mixing bowl, whereas some people take a plastic mixing bowl + pyrex dish for(Original post by Formerly Helpful_C)

Once you've removed a wok, pyrex bowl and tin foil, you're not going to be able to cook anything other than ready meals and supernoodles.
If I was going to remove anything, then it would be two bits of cutlery - the knife (just use the sharp one instead), and the teaspoon (use the bigger one). -
Re: Pots, Pans, Kettles what do i ACTUALLY need??I love when people make assumptions without having any information. Instead of having a wok, I would have a purpose-built sauce pan. Would you buy a ruler instead of a spatula? Of course not. In the same vein, I wouldn't buy a wok when I want a saucepan.(Original post by Origami Bullets)

Why would I want to contaminate my body with rubbish like pizza and pasta bake? My superior diet does not require me to mix ingredients together.

my mum's already bought cutlery but it's not particularly distinctive, so I'm going to need to have a nail polish session xD
