Has the One Child Policy gone too far?
The article below shows a Chinese woman being forced by local authorities to abort her 7-month old foetus, because she was unable to pay the £4,000 fine, down to the pact that she was paying for her mother-in-law's cancer treatment.

At first I thought this was outrageous, arresting and beating a pregnant women so she gets rid of her unborn child. However, the other argument is that the One Child Policy is heavily advertised and has been going for 33 years - people are perfectly aware of the consequences.

Please discuss and answer the poll, I would be very interested to hear your views.

Grisly photos of a young woman lying beside her baby which had been aborted by force in her seventh month of pregnancy have caused outrage in China.
Pictures purporting to show the woman and her blood-covered baby have shocked anti-abortion groups in China - and fury is spreading around the world.
The mother, Feng Jianmei, told local media that she was forceably injected with a chemical to induce an abortion and her child was stillborn 36 hours later.

Because she already had a child, said Feng, local birth-control authorities ordered her to pay a fine of £4,000.
She didn't have the money, she said, so a team from the local family planning authority in Shannxi province came to collect her from her home and take her to hospital for the forced abortion.
Recounting the horror, Feng said she told the family planning department she could not pay the fine because her mother-in-law needed money for cancer treatment.

if i remember rightly i seem to recall they also occassionally practise post natal abortion aswell...
but in fairness to them they have relaxed the policy somewhat, especially in rural areas.
Plus given their population, something had to be done they couldnt just let it spiral. Its a shame things like this happen but sometimes for the good of the many a few must pay the price and as you said she knew what would happen... still very sad though.

Killing a child in the womb at 7 months is too far. I understand that China is overpopulated, but other measures can be taken that don't involve killing an almost fully developed baby.

Thats disgusting, forcing someone to abort a child when they maybe dont believe in abortion or when they are that far along is appalling and may have terrible consequences for the mental health of the mother.
When I was studying Geography GCSE this came up and there was a mother who was 8 and a half months pregnant, had her baby forcibly aborted and she also died.

Even if it has been well advertised etc, what about rape victims who are forcibly impregnated against their will or just simple accidents. Why should those people have to abort their children if they dont want to?

They should have brought in more incentives to have less children other than murder.

But hey, since when has China ever taken notice of its populations human rights?

I remember there is an area in China where the One Child policy is not in existence and guess what- they still have a lower population count compared to the national average.

If I was raped and became pregnant because of it I'd want to have an abortion. Why would you want to give birth to someone who will remind you of the rape every time you look at them?

Sceptical of the source, but I think the One Child Polkcy went too far anyway.

He didn't say you couldn't, but some rape victims may want to (because of values etc).

Yes thats how i feel, but some people, especially religious people are strongly against abortion, and then is it fair to ask them to abort if it isnt their fault they are raped and pregnant, but have tried to follow the rules regardless of this?

I agree with this. The policy has been going for a very long time now. So much so that there is a lack of younger people in China now. All of the lengths they go to to stop unauthorised births are and always have been unacceptable.

The 2 child policy would be sensible to keep the population at the same rate, seeing as 2 is the replacement level. This would be a good way to prevent the population becoming too small or big - it keeps it at a steady rate.

I agree, while it would not necessarily help China's overpopulation, countries such as Russia who are having underpopulation troubles because their population is decreasing rapidly, serve as a reason to ensure China's population doesn't plummet sometime in the near future. The damage has been done, but they can cut their losses and leave now.

It's interesting to see how this One Child Policy is working because we'll soon have to do it one day or have face starvation on a massive scale. If there are other means of controlling our population then I'm all for that, but I know that if it keeps increasing there won't be enough food so people still starve to death. That is the fact of the matter. We cannot keep replacing land for growing food with homes for an ever increasing population. That is just madness.

Even if we did introduce it in the UK one day, the government would never be as strict as the chinese government ever was. I agree that there aren't many other ways to control our ever increasing population and we shall soon be desperately short of food space/resources in general.

I thought they stopped this policy is many/all areas as they realised what a stupid idea it was. ??

They're now left with a large ederly population and not enough people to look after them or work to generate enough taxes etc.

They should have done it more gradually and ethically.

Over population will destroy the planet, you have to set the line somewhere or otherwise have a big war to level the playing fields. Any hippy bull****ter who comes in to attack the one child policy in China for one probably isn't Chinese so doesn't have much of a say to a different culture and society's laws as well as ignoring the drastic consequences of overpopulation.

Yes, we are facing great problems with overpopulation, but not just in China. If we were to fairly deal with this issue then every country in the world should participate.

If China wants to develop properly without sucking the world dry it needs its one child policy to lower it's population in order to achieve development.
India's cultural bias of favoring male babies over female babies should help its population go down as well eventually.
