Re: Tourists car blown up by police in Londonyar i just noticed the other thread, my bad(Original post by Snagprophet)
There is indeed another thread on this, but I'll sum up my opinion:
It was stupid to leave your broken down car.
It was stupid to leave it on double yellows.
It was stupid to leave a note 'excusing' yourself, suggesting someone doesn't understand how the system works so it get assumed to be a terrorist quite rightly as it's very suspicious.
I think he should be fined for breaking the law twice: leaving a broken down car in public and leaving it on double yellows. I think he should be fined for wasting police time.
I think he's selfish and ignorant for thinking he can get away with it while 'sightseeing'.
I hope the car is crushed.
may i ask how you expect him to move a broken car though? -
Re: London tourist's illegally parked car blown-up by policeActually he had done something wrong. Regardless of 'leaving a note', you shouldn't just leave your car in a place where you can't park and wander off. If his car was truly immovable, then he should have stayed with it to wait for help. If I'm honest, I'm not sure the guy should be given compensation at all. He should not have left the car, and the police did what they needed to do as a result.(Original post by Iqbal007)
They should..............just in this case they got it wrong..........just saying he clearly hasn't done anything wrong and the met are looking at giving out compensation
And I think that attitude is absolutely ridiculous. You would be far better safe than sorry. They should always check or, as someone else has said, lives are at risk. -
Re: Tourists car blown up by police in LondonKeep putting explosives on it and eventually the street cleaners will do their thing.(Original post by cl_steele)

Re: London tourist's illegally parked car blown-up by policeI did state he should have, in other posts.............its his fault for leaving I know......I also know its better to be safe than sorry, but still think he does deserve the compensation for the boot. But we won't know unless the story is followed up.(Original post by agoetcherian)

Re: London tourist's illegally parked car blown-up by policeNo every case is not different which is why precedent exists. Here's the very similar story from a few years ago I was talking about. Though I can't find the follow up article that said he had not received any compensation this line should give you an indication:(Original post by Iqbal007)
Every case is different, you just never know with the courts today
"a spokesman for insurance price comparison website confused.com said it is unlikely he will receive a payout for his car as he parked illegally."
The same is true if you leave your luggage unattended in an airport; you will not get compensation when it's destroyed.Last edited by Logi; 15-06-2012 at 00:19. -
Re: London tourist's illegally parked car blown-up by police1) THey had no idea who the owner was.(Original post by zara55)
This is a shocking story. If a British gentlemen with an Asian name wishes to leave a note on a Ford Mondeo parked outside, say, David Cameron's house or the HQ of the Air Force saying "forgot to buy Samosas - gone shops - back later", then that should be enough for the anti-terrorism police. Surely.
2) I walked past 2 illegally parked cars a few years ago in Picadilly (one of them I even noticed). A few hours later and the bomb squad is disarming two very large bombs. [The Tiget Tiger bombs]. These are real threats. The police are informed by past experience - both islamic terrorism, and the often forgotten Irish dissidents (IRA - Real IRA etc) -

thats so harsh, but couldn't that be cancelled out if the car was really broken down provided with evidence?

Re: London tourist's illegally parked car blown-up by policeSo the local concil and police then fine him for costs of the callout to deal with his abandoned vehicle.(Original post by Iqbal007)

Think how much stick the police would have gotten if they had ignored a suspiously parked vehicle at the centre of London (a place at high risk of a terror attack), and it had been packed with explosives; all because there was note saying "broken down, leaving my car till AA turn up while I sight see". Deserves a double fine for breaking parking rules and wasting police time (taxpayer money).

Re: London tourist's illegally parked car blown-up by policeThis has nothing to do with faith or anything of the sort, so it's stupid to make an assumption on that...........I saw it, sounded interested and posted(Original post by A Perfect Circle)
I wonder if the OP would've been even a little interested in this story had the person involved not been Asian (or most likely a Muslim).
Just curious.
By the way the police did nothing wrong here. I know that's not what you wanted to hear but it's true. Sorry OP.

Re: London tourist's illegally parked car blown-up by policeI wouldn't be surprised if the note was the reason they did it(Original post by curtis871)
Oh if it had a note on it that's fine. Couldn't possibly be a lie. -
Re: London tourist's illegally parked car blown-up by policeQuite right. The police should blow up every illegally parked car from now on, just to be safe. Not only will this stop terrorism once and for all, it'll teach people not to break down in places where it is expressly forbidden to park.(Original post by S1L3NTPR3Y)

Re: Tourists car blown up by police in London
The police have a lot to answer for. Although this is pretty funny, I'd be really pissed off and would demand an investigation as to why they blew up the car, as opposed to tow it away and I'd demand compensation. I knew it was an offence to park on a double yellow line, but is it normal policy to destroy someone's car if they are ill-parked?

Re: Tourists car blown up by police in LondonThere was a controlled explosion as opposed to moving it I guess so that if there was a bomb in it, it wouldn't kill innocent tow-men / people in the houses of commons / etc. It wasn't just the double yellows, it was the location and the fact noone was in the car.(Original post by medic_armadillo7)

Fair enough, the car broke down. He should have stayed with it, not just left a note.
