    Holding reset button down?
    Just because i'm bored and curious

    What effect would it have on a computer if you held the reset button down for, say, 10 minutes?

    You'd reset the power state of your computer.

    Yeah, i knew that. Perhaps i should have worded the question better, so here we go;

    Would it mess up the computer if you held down the reset button on a computer for 10 minutes?

    As I said; it will just reset the power state of your computer - that's all.

    As far as I remember, if you hold it down for 10 seconds it resets the BIOS to factory settings (you might have to take the battery out...). That's the boot settings, the fan, stuff like that, not stuff which most people change unless they're installing Linux.

    I think you're thinking of an ATX reset, which is a 10 second hold of the power button while the AC is disconnected. It shouldn't do anything to the CMOS.
