Re: Why has no-one tried to copy Pokemon? The furore surrounding dogfights and cockfights has put off anyone from introducing a new spin on "Catch them and make them fight each other" genre.(Original post by like a boss)
I am really surprised that no developer has tried to make an RPG like the Pokemon games, considering how successful they have been for so many years. I'm talking about the concept of 'catching' creatures in an open game world, and then training them to fight for you. Pokemon is a very simple version of this formula, I would have expected a developer to expand on this type of game.
It doesn't even have to be 'creatures', it can be soldiers or anything. The Metal Gear Solid games on the PSP have probably got the closest to this formula, as you can capture any soldiers you want and then train them to work/fight for you. This system worked very well in MGS, which isn't even an RPG.
What do you guys think? I can understand that developers wouldn't make an obvious Pokemon clone because their characters wouldn't be recognisable, but I am surprised that nobody has tried to implement the basic concept of the Pokemon games that has made it so popular. -
I remember when everyone at my primary school had beyblades. Those were the days...(Original post by Lollyage)
Beyblade
Although that was probably always more popular as a TV show rather than a game. I still had a little stadium and beyblades though

Re: Why has no-one tried to copy Pokemon? But digimon didn't have team rocket(Original post by aspirinpharmacist)
Hey, Digimon was good! Better than the Pokemon series which is just "Ash goes to this place, catches pokemon, battles someone, mostly wins, sometimes loses, but mostly he wins when Pikachu whips their ass." And repeat. Digimon at least had a plot.
Spoiler:Show

Re: Why has no-one tried to copy Pokemon?Digimon wasn't a fail :/ I loved digimons(Original post by es.c)
Lol it really did fail. But the theme tune was catchy, I can still remember it for some reason
Didn't the creator of Pokemon die in the japan flood?

Re: Why has no-one tried to copy Pokemon?
I bought Pokemon White the other day and I was just wondering, is there some sort of leader board or something to show off your stats and how many Pokemon you have collected out of the 600+? Or is the only way you can do this by loading up the individual games and checking the Pokedex to see how many Pokemon you've collected from that specific game?

Re: Why has no-one tried to copy Pokemon? One of my favourite games as a child was Dragon Warrior Monsters (which is the first in the series of Dragon Quest Monsters, using characters from Dragon Quest VI).(Original post by kittyb99)
There was that Dragon Quest Monsters:Joker game for DS a while back. You catch monsters and use them to battle against other monsters. It was essentially Pokémon except you could actually see the monsters roaming about.
It came out a few years after pokemon red/blue. What it had that pokemon did not was breeding. I hear the pokemon now has some sort of rudimentary breeding thing going on that isn't just to make Pichus and Elekids. But it still won't be like the breeding of the DQM series, where you must breed to make stronger monsters and unique un-catchable ones.
So yes, it's like pokemon in the catch-monsters element of it, but the games had completely different focuses (catching vs. breeding) that I wouldn't call it a copy. -
Re: Why has no-one tried to copy Pokemon?Fair enough- I never got far enough into the game to realise the differences(Original post by lightburns)

Re: Why has no-one tried to copy Pokemon?
Because if they did copy them they would have a multi-million dollar lawsuit flying their way

But really i dunno anything else would just seem like a cheap knock off of Pokemon. Also Digimon wasn't that bad for the first 3 seasons or so then it became weird as hell haha but so did Pokemon, some of the Pokemon look high on LSD others look like they fell from the top of a building or the developers created them when they were **** faced. -
Re: Why has no-one tried to copy Pokemon? As a child whilst playing DWM I accidentally bred out my Zoma (probably the first boss-level monster you can breed) into a giantworm (guess what, it's a rubbishy worm) and didn't play the game again. I now have it on an emulator.(Original post by kittyb99)
Fair enough- I never got far enough into the game to realise the differences
It's all about the breeding. You pass on skills, so want them to have a good mix of skills. Some special skills are made by breeding skills together. Then boss-level monsters can't be caught, you have to breed them. Stats are also bred in, and the more bred they get, the higher level they can achieve. Careful breeding makes you a champ, whereas in pokemon, a zapdos is largely a zapdos. There's some control over skills and stats, sure, but it's less so. -
Re: Why has no-one tried to copy Pokemon?Alright, let me rephrase that. At least Digimon had a varied plot. Pokemon is just repetitive.(Original post by M4LLY)

Re: Why has no-one tried to copy Pokemon?I thought they were both great, I think any possible plot of pokemon was lost on me due to how infrequently I managed to catch it....(Original post by aspirinpharmacist)

But I always loved the storylines and the cliff-hangers drove me insane. Digimon was also the tv series that taught me that no matter how vad things seem, the good guys will always win. Not sure if that took the excitement out of it or not :L -
Re: Why has no-one tried to copy Pokemon?
There have been many, suh as Monster Rancher and Digimon, however there are also slightly more recent ones such as Monster Racer, although I'm not sure if that ever got a release outside of the US. All this talk of Pokemon has made me excited for my import of White 2 to come :3 and let's all hope that Pokemon Conquest gets a European release instead of just a apanese and a US one

He was much more successful as a villain. And a good guy, when they finally sorted him out.
