Re: Could we retake The Falklands today
If Argentina managed to take the islands then we would struggle to re take them without an aircraft carrier it would be a very costly and a very deadly operation.
but the difference is Argentina have absoloutley no chance of taking them from us they are far better defended this time around
Defences—
1 Type 45 Destroyer—A Type 45 Destroyer which is stationed in the sea’s surrounding the island is capable of detecting any Argentine aircraft as soon as they take off or detecting Argentine ships as soon as they set sail. It possess a Rapier missile defence system that could take out most of the Argentine air force single handily before the Argentines know what hit them
1 Hunter-Killer Vanguard Nuclear Submarine—A submarine which is most likely patrolling the waters around the Falklands and Argentina. It would be capable to taking out any Argentine ship with ease and without them knowing what hit them, submarines pretty much won the war last time with the sinking of the Belgrano it would do it again.
4 Eurofighter Typhoons—Among the best fighter aircraft in the world and could take out much of the Argentine Airforce by themselves.
Rapier Ground to Air Missile Defence System—Based on the islands and complete with a detection system capable of detecting any aircraft that approach the Falklands airspace. It is the 3rd part of winning the air battle the Rapier Missile Defence System, The Type 45 Destroyer and the 4 Eurofighters would easily defeat the entire Argentine Airforce and if the battle of the skies is won then it paves the way to winning the war.
1’200 or 1’500 British Soldiers—In case any Argentine troops manage to evade the other defences and land on the island perhaps in a bid to destroy the missile defence system or destroy the runway then there are 1’200 to 1’500 well trained and well equipped troops stationed on the island who could take out any small Argentine invasion force or hold off any bigger one until reinforcements arrive.
Reinforcements—It would take reinforcement Eurofighter Typhoons approximately 24 hours to reach the Falkland Islands via the Ascension Islands and 48 Hours to 72 Hours for Soldier reinforcements and other battleships.
While the technology and general capability of the British military has improved since the Falklands war Argentina has pretty much the same as before if not worse there Airforce is made up of ageing Russian aircraft as is their Navy they would be no match for the British forces as it stands. The standards in the Argentine army is also far lower than the British army who are among maybe even the best trained armed forces in the world with far more time spent of training and has far better equipment than the Argentine armed forces.Last edited by Shabalala; 16-06-2012 at 01:48. -
Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayActually the Vanguard is used for Trident, not for attacking other ships. The Trafalgar is the Royal Navy's Hunter-Killer, soon to be replaced by the Astute.(Original post by Shabalala)

Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayExactly.(Original post by silverbolt)
no chance the UK wouldnt have the balls to stand up to Argentina - not without America holding her the hand anyway. Cameron and wishy washy limp wristed government sure as hell doesnt have the stones Thatcher had. and like her or loathe her that woman had some serious stones
From the house of commons debates, one could tell who's superior. -
Re: Could we retake The Falklands todaySerious question; with all these talk about the US helping the UK with their 'superior' war machines, is that the reason why they are a bankrupt country?(Original post by Aj12)

Couple of those parked off their coast. I don't think we'd ever here any complaints again..... -
Re: Could we retake The Falklands today
Has nobody noticed? Argentina is right next to the Falklands!
It's really close to them, and the Falklands are British territory. Therefore Britain should invade Argentina. Problem solved.
More seriously: the Falklands are ours. There is no dispute, as there is no dispute about France's DOM-TOM. -
Re: Could we retake The Falklands today
What is it with the comments in this thread that Britain would not attack without America saying we can? They said we could't do it the last time around and look what happened. If Argentina tried an invasion we aren't just going to roll over. As spineless as our politicians are they all know if we lose those islands it will hammer their political chances.

Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayPlays a part in running up debt as does any government spending. 40% of US spending is on social security and medicaid and mediaid so they play just as much a part in it.(Original post by kka25)

The US is hardly bankrupt either. -

Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayIt would take an act of gross military and political incompetence roughly on a par with the Charge of the Light Brigade for us to lose the Falklands to Argentina as things stand. To achieve that Argentina would almost certainly have to rely (as they did last time) on conscripts who would almost certainly take one look at the determination of the British forces and decide (as they did last time) that their best chance of ever seeing their families again was to surrender. So they did. And they would again.
However, if they did manage to retake the islands, the decisive factor would probably be Mount Pleasant airfield. Even with the parlous state of their air force, it would probably be possible for them to hold onto that and if we couldn't take that back, we'd struggle to maintain a foothold on the rest of the islands. We'd do it but it would be very expensive in terms of both lives lost and equipment and as long as they held the airfield, they would stand a good chance of holding onto Stanley which would give them control of the islands in principle, if not in practice. -
Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayNo. A similar vote in the mid-90s returned a 94.5% verdict in favour ot the status quo.(Original post by Mr Dangermouse)
Is it possible that they may vote to become part of Argentina?
This.(Original post by flugelr)
No, but Argentina couldn't invade them either.
Whether or not we could retake them isn't important. We wouldn't lose them in the first place. -
Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayThat's such a retarded argument.(Original post by CJG21)
It's all stupid. It's next to Argentina, so there is no reason for it to belong to us. If Mongolia owned the Shetland Islands we'd tell them to piss off. -
Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayI never said they will and its unlikely but I said they can do it if they wanted in future.(Original post by Fynch101)
Laughing at all the losers in this thread who have been raised by the media and the falsehood that nations and peoples exist as separate identities. Businesses rule the world you morons. Businesses and nothing else. What do you think the president of Argentina argues about in her cabinet? How the falkland islands should be theirs because they are closer to Argentina? Seriously?
They just take calculations done by people with actual brains which give Argentina a significant boost to national income from sovereignty of the falkland islands. Nothing more, nothing less. And it seems these calculations suggest Argentina has something to gain.
The idea that Brazil would 'take the islands just cos it wants to' is so childish, stone-age, and ultimately lame. Brazil has far more to lose by 'taking the islands just cos it wants to', and always will. But some of us think its cool to talk about a nation being powerful. Well really, when you think about it, it is utterly pathetic. Grow up.
Its cool and I am sure Brazil can become a more powerful country than UK in future. -
Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayPowerful is such a disgusting word.(Original post by Luffy.)

Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayMilitarily, it will take decades for Brazil to catch up with the United Kingdom.(Original post by Luffy.)

Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayMaybe for you but not for me. Powerful is one of my favorite word even though I dont use that word too often, my favorite word in English is 'indeed'.(Original post by Fynch101)
Powerful is such a disgusting word. -
Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayI never said it will be tomorrow. One decade is ten years which means twenty years or more is decades and its not so long. I dont think Brazil can surpass UK in military in the next twenty years but it wont be so long. It wont take more than fifty years from now.(Original post by Cannotbelieveit)
Militarily, it will take decades for Brazil to catch up with the United Kingdom. -
Re: Could we retake The Falklands todayYou don't seem to care about killing innocent people at all by the way you're talking.(Original post by Luffy.)

Re: Could we retake The Falklands todaySo saying Brazil will surpass UK and powerful is one of my favorite words in English means I dont care about killing innocent people.(Original post by Fynch101)
You don't seem to care about killing innocent people at all by the way you're talking.
Explain that to me?
