will my GCSE's bring everything else down for DENTISTRY? whyyyyy :(
Hi
Basically I didn't focus at high school and just winged everything and left with these gcse's? AAAABBBCC + distinction. I really really really want to be a dentist and these don't even meet the requirements for ANY university. I'm in lower sixth at college studying biology, chemistry, maths and psychology. So far from my January exams I achieved AAAA and the exams I just sat in May I (hopefully iA) think I have done the same. I have got 2 different dental practices sorted for work experience in the summer, voluntary work in a charity shop and voluntary work with disabled adults & kids and hopefully a couple of days in the dental hospital.
So what i'm trying to say/ask is that if all goes well meaning: I complete more than enough work experience, have a good personal statement, do better than average in UKCAT and (iA) achieve A*AA (or better) at the end of college, do I stand any chance getting into dentistry?
I have no other aim except do do dentistry, if everything else is really good will my crap GCSE's bring me down? The past few days I have been so low and upset thinking that my stupid mistakes in high school will prevent me from pursuing this career, it is making me depressed, literally.
Oh and if your in high school and reading this i plead to you work hard, you will not get this chance again and it WILL have an impact on you. I wish I actually tried. Feel like crap maaaaaaaaan.
All help is appreciate -

Yes they will because you need A* and A's and you have a lot of B's and C's and they don't accept BTEC so they only valid things you have is 4 A's which isn't enough so give up your dream.
Even if everything else is a lot more than they required, they will still bring it down? -
Re: will my GCSE's bring everything else down for DENTISTRY? whyyyyy :(I see that you have yet to complete your GCSEs - care to explain where your understanding of what dental schools require comes from?(Original post by SportsFan)

Just say you've wanted to be a dentist all your life and that you practiced on your pets/siblings when you were younger. That'll eclipse your GCSEs (that really aren't that bad).
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?!
no really can anyone just give me some advice or something. This has been bringing me down the past 2/3 days loads

I don't think it's too much of of an issue, you're voluntary work sounds good, so just make your personal statement really based on your work experience and voluntary work - what you've learned, why you'd make a good dentist ect. You just have to be aware some uni's such as Birmingham are a big fan of GCSE's and so make sure you apply to the ones which are less bothered (e.g Leeds put big emphasis on extra curriculars/work ex/ voluntary. Get a good UKCAT and your GCSE's will matter less.
Just keep optimistic and fit as much stuff into this summer as possible!
Also make sure you show team work, leadership and manual dexterity.Last edited by Cualquier; 15-06-2012 at 17:27. -
Re: will my GCSE's bring everything else down for DENTISTRY? whyyyyy :(
you could apply next year and retake some of your gcse's (the ones that may not meet the requirements, e.g. kcl require maths at a B or something and english at a C). however if you meet the requirement however, try and focus on the other important areas of your dentistry application like your PS and voluntary/ work experience.
