Natural Sciences/Help choosing course?
Hello,
I'm a year 12 Student, currently studying Physics, German, Biology and English Literature, possibly dropping German or English Literature when I continue to year 13.
Im struggling to come to a definitive choice as to what to study at University, I know that I want to do a Science, but undecided as to what specific area, so I've stumbled upon Natural Science courses, at University's like the UCL, would I be able to study the physics modules in any Natural Science's courses with my A-levels (as I know physics usually requires Maths)
and finally, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas to help me choose a course?
Regards,
Joel -
Re: Natural Sciences/Help choosing course?
Physics and biology is an odd mix at the best of times. You could go for natural sciences. But perhaps it may be best to pick up maths or chemistry to AS at least, just to bridge the gaps. UCL may also do joint honours courses so you might be able to combine your arts subject in there. I know someone doing Maths with German, for instance.

Re: Natural Sciences/Help choosing course?
I have already finished my AS-levels, so I don't really have the choice to pick up Maths or chemistry at AS, but i do regret not taking Maths, but I had no idea of how well Maths goes with them all, my school never really told us anything of how important that could be and it has hampered my University choices, but oh well!
Nothing I can do about it
Should probably look more in depth at Natural Sciences -
I know you've listed your Alevel subjects but which of them have you enjoy the most?it's important to do what you enjoy studying at university. I agree with aspiringgenius regarding natural sciences but I will be able to advise you further if you supply more information.(Original post by JFraser95)

Re: Natural Sciences/Help choosing course?
Having already finished your other AS subjects shouldn't affect whether you can pick up some others this year, as long as you can handle the workload. I have a friend who decided to do Aerospace Engineering and is now picking up Further Maths AS to study alongside his A2 subjects. Ask your teachers about the possibility of doing something similar.

Re: Natural Sciences/Help choosing course? Not doing maths rules out a lot of Physics degrees and not doing chemistry rules out medicine and biochemistry etc. So you're options are to study maths in Y13 (perfectly possible - you can self teach if it really comes to it) or pick up AS Chem or something and apply for a single science. As for Natsci, many Physical science streams require Maths so you really should take up maths if you want to do physics-related stuff at degree level.(Original post by JFraser95)

Unfortunately your subject choice is quite unconventional which limits your options. -
Re: Natural Sciences/Help choosing course?I myself took a long time to find the course that's right for me (I finished my A-levels in 2010 and I'm applying for university this year for 2013 entry)(Original post by JFraser95)

Now, there were so many different courses that sounded so good, so many pros and cons, but quite literally, you do just have to follow your heart, even if it does sound a bit cliché. You just need to assess your interests, you must have a particular interest within the broad subject of Science? What would you love to study for another 3-4 years? That's all it centres around really. So simple when it took me so long to decide eh!?
I found it useful to write out my interests and what I wanted out of a career. I'm interested in Biology, animals, conservation and the like and I wanted a career that was challenging/rewarding and one where I was constantly gaining and learning new knowledge. So I browsed different job profiles on Nextstep and found a few which stood out to me (ecologist, biologist, zoologist, amongst others that weren't animal related) and I decided that zoology best fitted my interests. The fact that I would essentially be researching = I would constantly be learning, which is what I want from a career. So now I'm going to study Zoology!
Maybe you can apply this logic to your own situation?
EDIT: Whoops! I forgot you mentioned Natural Sciences. Maybe this is a good idea if you're not particularly sure as it's quite a broad degree?Last edited by WhamBamJam.; 04-07-2012 at 19:10.
