Re: can't eat vegetables, they make me sick
Thanks for the suggestions and advice, I've already tried a few of them though, and they haven't worked

I tried having vegetable soup, where vegetables are put in a blender with seasoning, I couldn't finish it, I felt like I was eating vomit and it was difficult to hold down.

Sweetcorn is disgusting, I pick it out. Peas make me gag, in any form.

    (Original post by zjs)
Your consumption, or lack thereof, of vegetables is not what's making you overweight.
It's not contributing? What is it then

All the weight loss diets I've looked up require the consumption of vegetables :/

Hiding the taste of vegetables can be done simply, effectively, and without adding lots of fatty sauces etc. I used to just blend them up and add in plenty of seasoning and curry powder. Doesn't look nice, but it tastes fine.

There are also thinks like Chinese or Indian style vegetables, which might be less healthy than steamed veg on its own, but don't detract from the health benefits of eating the veg as opposed to not eating it.
I've tried chinese and indian cooked vegetables, same gag reflex, you can just taste seasoning

If you can eat lentil soup, you can eat a soup that includes leeks, carrots and root vegetables. If you can eat green beans you can eat a variety of beans, and if you can eat lettuce and cucumbers you can probably eat a salad including spinach, tomatoes and peppers.
My mum gave me soup that had leeks and carrots among other things in it, this one felt like eating vomit too.

I'm alright with beans, I can have chilli, but that's not really enough, I'm lacking necessary nutrition aren't I? And I can't try to lose weight just eating beans

Oh no, tomatoes make me physically sick, raw or roasted or in any other form. Peppers, I've had them on pizza, they weren't very nice but I can hold them down, as long as the pieces aren't too thick

spinach, not very nice, I can tolerate it though. Someone made me eat spinach omelet once

Lettuce may not be good nutrition wise but it still has some nutrition and is a healthy food. It is better to eat lettuce than to not eat it at all. I'd suggest including lettuce into your diet, at least it is a healthy food. It tastes of nothing either as you've said yourself, so they should be easy for you to eat.
Beans are a healthy food because they have a lot of protein and fibre. You should eat more of them in your diet as they will help you to lose weight. I don't know the exact science, but they have a type of fibre which actually aids in weight loss.
Fruit is a perfect food. Eat it.
Yeeah, but what's the point of lettuce, really?

I agree, they help weight loss, but I can't just eat beans, I need a healthy diet with more variety

Fruit isn't so perfect, and you shouldn't really have them while trying to lose weight, they'll slow you down. Some fruit now and then is alright

Hmm, I tried that, still didn't like the taste, ended up just eating the noodles and chicken.

But I need to start eating them because I'm becoming overweight. I cannot even put them in my mouth, I gag when I do, and I even hate the smell (like boiling cauliflower...disgusting). But in order to hide the taste of vegetables you have to make them unhealthy, which is pointless. Is there any way of making vegetables taste ok/mask their taste without making them unhealthy?

I can already eat lentil soup, green beans and lettuce/cucumbers, that's about it really though.
Vegetable curry or dhosas they will change your view on them

Then it's likely an aversion that's in your mind. You make yourself dislike the food.

Weight gain is a simple equation: you're eating a calorific surplus. You have a BMR - base metabolic rate - of calories you need to consume in a day, even if you're doing nothing, to maintain weight. Eat more calories than this and you'll start to gain weight.

All the weight loss diets I've looked up require the consumption of vegetables :/
Because they're a source of carbs and vitamins that are low in calories.

I've tried chinese and indian cooked vegetables, same gag reflex, you can just taste seasoning
It's in your mind: all you can taste is the seasoning, not the vegetables. If you can't even taste the vegetables, why does it make you gag?

Chop them up smaller or eat it without thinking about what's in it.

Incorporate beans (I assumed you meant green beans rather than kidney beans), spinach and peppers into your diet more then. It's a good start at least.

Ok, how do I get over this subconscious aversion?

Because they're a source of carbs and vitamins that are low in calories.
But if I just limit my caloric intake, that's not the whole story, not all calories are equal, so I could still be gaining weight? Or at least be very unhealthy. Either way I need to start eating vegetables

It's in your mind: all you can taste is the seasoning, not the vegetables. If you can't even taste the vegetables, why does it make you gag?
I meant you can taste the seasoning as well as the vegetable, the added flavour doesn't make the vegetable flavours more appealing. How can I get rid of this mind aversion to vegetables?

Chop them up smaller or eat it without thinking about what's in it.
I guess this is what I will have to resort to

Incorporate beans (I assumed you meant green beans rather than kidney beans), spinach and peppers into your diet more then. It's a good start at least.
    I'll do that

I had a slight aversion that I cured myself of by not making myself think 'I'll hate this' before I'd even tried it.

I'm not the best person to ask though.

But if I just limit my caloric intake, that's not the whole story, not all calories are equal, so I could still be gaining weight? Or at least be very unhealthy. Either way I need to start eating vegetables
In terms of weight loss or gain, the bottom line is calories in vs calories out.

Of course, if you simply restrict your calories and ignore things like getting a good balance of carbohydrates, healthy fats and protein, as well as vitamins and minerals, then obviously it'll be unhealthy.

I meant you can taste the seasoning as well as the vegetable, the added flavour doesn't make the vegetable flavours more appealing. How can I get rid of this mind aversion to vegetables?
I'm talking tabasco sauce and chilli powder.

Have you tried pasata? It's sieved tomatoes but it isn't as thick as tomato purée and doesn't have lumps in it like tinned tomatoes. If you add a crushed garlic clove and some dried mixed herbs it makes a good sauce for various pasta dishes, or you can add it to some meat and beans to make a chilli con carne. I hate fresh tomatoes and I'm not a big fan of tinned tomatoes but I can eat pasata as it's more like a sauce than a vegetable.

The point of lettuce is that it will help to fill you up and it will help you to get used to the texture of vegetables.
No, I'm not suggesting eating beans all the time, just include them in your diet.
Fruit IS perfect. It is digested almost instantly into the body and it requires barely any digestion. Fruit is perfect if you want to lose weight. I have fruit for breakfast every day. Try eating some and you will lose weight. Fruit isn't fattening.

Thanks for your help I already get given a lot lettuce, I'm used to its texture now but it doesn't translate into helping me with other vegetables :/ Right, they're in my diet and not going out

If fruit is so perfect for losing weight, then why does everyone from Tim Ferriss (author of 4-hour body, slow carb diet) to Gary Taubes (author of why we get fat and good calories, bad calories) and Dr. Dukan (author of a very popular diet in France) advocate cutting down on fruit to having very little fruit altogether? They must all be on to something at least, in terms of losing weight efficiently. And it makes sense, despite their nutritional value they have a significant amount of sugar (main culprit of fat gain) and carbs in them, and of course not all fruits are equal

But I will have some every now and then, like I said unless you can convince me otherwise

You really ought to read something about fruit or listen to what others are saying about it instead of just making up your own theories about what fruit is and does with no basis...

With no basis? You can't get fat eating fruit! Have you not seen fruitarians? They have amazing bodies and amazing skin, teeth etc. There is nothing wrong with fruit.

Just think about it, will you? Fruitarians presumably eat very little other than fruit. So they'd have to eat a lot for their carb intake to be high, and the only sugars they get are from the fruit. Eating fruit as part of a normal diet will not produce the same result. Eating fruit certainly does not help anyone lose weight in and of itself. Use your noggin.
Any role fruit plays in a weight-loss diet will be matched and exceeded by vegetables eaten instead.

Oh... you think low carb diets are good in the long term. I don't think we'll ever agree here. There was no need to be rude to me. I have eaten fruit as part of a healthy balanced diet and have lost over a stone since the beginning of the year. Of course fruit doesn't help anyone lose weight "in and of itself", no food does that. But it is a healthy food because it is easily digested and has plenty of vitamins and minerals which we need, and in most cases can't get from anything else. The OP has said she doesn't like many vegetables so it's crucial she eats fruit otherwise she won't be getting many nutrients at all. As I said with the lettuce thing, it's best she eats some fruit rather than none at all.

Nowhere did I say that I thought low carb diets were good, period. Carb monitoring and often carb restriction is a key point in most people's diet change when trying to eat more healthily, since most people eat way more carbs than is necessary. Cutting excess carbs is an easy way to cut calories.
I'm not sure why you think the idea that fruit is easily digested means it is healthy. Bread is quickly digested and metabolised, doesn't mean it's going to help anyone lose weight. If anything, the opposite. Feel free to enlighten me if I'm missing something though.
Sure, it's good to eat some fruit to get vitamins, particularly if you genuinely cannot eat any vegetables. However the fact that you ate some fruit as part of your balanced diet and lost weight says nothing. Absolutely nothing. Losing weight is about calorie control and exercise. If you'd had something else with the same calories instead of the fruit the result would be no different.

It depends what type of bread it is, I'm assuming you're meaning white bread which has no nutrients whatsoever, therefore it cannot be compared to fruit. Brown bread takes longer to digest because it is a complex carbohydrate therefore it helps you to feel fuller for longer. Personally I feel full after eating fruit for breakfast but this is because I've got used to it.
There's no doubt that weight loss is about calorie control and exercise. But why are you rubbishing the value of fruit in the diet?

I dunno if you can get them where you live, but Chinese vegetables are superior in just about every way (you can tell I have chinese ancestry :P). But seriously, things like buck choy and choy sum taste soooooo much better than peas and lettuce. They can actually be cooked in nice ways which incorporate flavor into them, unlike peas which are always just steamed and utterly tasteless, or lettuce which is just utterly tasteless anyway.

    Pft, all vgetables taste different.

Just include as many vegetables in whatever you already eat- add a bit of sweetcorn here, some salad leaves there, peas... keep experimenting with not only different veg but different styles of cooking and you will find some you like.

At the end of the day it's your health at stake.

Hmm, I've tried just adding them to what I eat, peas make me throw up there's no way I'm having them ever again, EVER...willing to try other things though

Sweetcorn's a nuisance and not that nutritious, same with salad leaves, but I can eat them

    You're right

Heh, I know I'm supposed to find all that healthy food appealing, but meh, I can take or leave fruit

    I'll keep trying though

Sounds interesting, I'll definitely try them out, chinese cooking looks fun too, thanks for the recommendation
