Found money today - thoughts?
Not that it really matters as such but I'm curious how others would have felt about this.
I was at work and as I walked down an aisle I spotted 2 £5 notes on the floor almost underneath the shelving. Noone was immediately in that specific area. The closest person was a women who was a couple yards away, on the other side and facing the other way. I actually felt like offering it to her but realised that there was no sign of it being hers as such. I took it into the assistant manager and just told her of the situation because I thought it wouldn't be a good idea to take money like that on camera and potentially jeopardise my job security. Also, if possible via CCTV .. it'd have been nice to return to owner of the money although that would be kinda hard to return it to them! I don't think it would be unfair for me to take that money though if the person could not be found. Anyways, the assistant manager immediately said she'll take it and put it behind the till. ' well done ' she said.
I'm not going to let it bother me as such cas at the end of the day it's not my money but I thought that was a bit of a cheapshot by the assistant. If anything shouldn't that be my money rather than the companies? I'm curious to know what other people think of that? Should I have just kept the money in the first place do you think? Perhaps I was too honest for my own good and shouldn't have been so? -
Re: Found money today - thoughts? If I was working and found money I would've given it in too; it's good that you are honest because even if the person doesn't get the money back, you have nothing on your conscience to what the consequences of taking the money will be.(Original post by Skill)

I think a lot of employees would have just kept it, and although it could have been on CCTV there was no real reason for it to be checked. If there was anyone in the area or anyone that looked as though they had lost something I would ask them, then at the end of the day I'd just have kept it as any rational worker would.

I think you did the most right and honest thing. When the assistant manager said they would put it "behind the till" did they perhaps mean in case someone wanted to claim it later? Putting it actually in the till would unbalance the till when they counted up at the end of the day. For £10 it probably isn't worth going back over the whole day's CCTV to see who dropped it, but at least that way if someone realises they have dropped it, it has been set aside to return to them. Well done for being so honest

Re: Found money today - thoughts?
In almost any other situation I would have kept the money. But as you were at work, if someone had of reported the money lost and the CCTV cameras may have been checked which could jeopardise your employment. If you had of been fired whats £10, only a couple hours of work ?
As I said, that's only because you were at work, if I had of found that money in the street I would have happily pocketed it. -

Honesty is always a good thing, and yeah it's always hard to tell whose money it is - but I would've done the same; as someone has said before, it's not yours and at the end of the day, it's better to have handed it in and be happy you've done the deed rather than worry for the day about whether or not you shoudl've given in that £10 (even though it's not a lot of money)
