Awards That Give You An Advantage When Applying For Computer Science
Hi, im a new member here and i had mainly one question, are there any awards that you could get that could possibly give you an advantage, in 15 so i still have time to group up as many as i can before the great big A Level's come. When i say awards they could be certificate .etc like the MIT x6.002x Certificate which i was too late to join.

Maths and Informatics Olympiad, maybe Udacity courses. -
Re: Awards That Give You An Advantage When Applying For Computer ScienceAny level..(Original post by musca-n lapte)
at what level? national / international? -
Re: Awards That Give You An Advantage When Applying For Computer Sciencefor example, position 8 at national physics Olympiad can be an advantage for cs even for international students?(Original post by tooosh)
Any level.. -
Re: Awards That Give You An Advantage When Applying For Computer ScienceRather it was in Maths or Informatics but maybe.(Original post by musca-n lapte)

Re: Awards That Give You An Advantage When Applying For Computer Scienceok thanks , I suppose that some universities are more willing than others to take into account such results, so if you have any idea what are they?(Original post by tooosh)

Re: Awards That Give You An Advantage When Applying For Computer ScienceNot sure but I would imagine they would help more for the top universities.(Original post by musca-n lapte)

Re: Awards That Give You An Advantage When Applying For Computer ScienceInformatics Olympiad: Any age between 5 and 20 is fine.(Original post by AwesomeSauce#1)
is this Olympiad for a specific year? im in year 10.
Mathematical Olympiad: Prefer people in year 11 or above for the senior version.Last edited by roblee; 17-06-2012 at 17:05. -

CCNA gave me an advantage.

Thought so, the maths Olympiad seemed quite hard, I'm going to go and find out more on the informatics Olympiad.(Original post by roblee)

Olympiads are not a must for anything though. Even for Oxbridge, as long as you can demonstrate high mathematical aptitude in the MAT, or at Cambridge in the Maths interview, Olympiads are only a bonus especially considering they're more based on opportunity than raw skill. Not everyone who's good at CS gets to do the Inf Olmypiad.

Re: Awards That Give You An Advantage When Applying For Computer SciencePresumably you're asking for a source for the second assertion? That is, for "they're more based on opportunity than raw skill" rather than "Olympiads are only a bonus"?(Original post by roblee)
Source? -
Re: Awards That Give You An Advantage When Applying For Computer ScienceYes. I don't contest that they only measure a minor subset of the skills that a mathematician or computer scientist should have or that they mostly preclude entrants who are better at longer-form problems, that's widely accepted so far as I know. The only "opportunity" bias that I am aware of, however, is that these things are mostly dominated by private-school students due to the higher level of education they get.(Original post by Chrosson)

Re: Awards That Give You An Advantage When Applying For Computer ScienceMy point was that you don't need them to get in so they're only a bonus if you have them.(Original post by roblee)

All Olympiads are open to all students in school but comprehensives don't bother with them and decent state schools will usually only participate in the big ones like Maths and the 3 Sciences. Anecdotal but I went to a top grammar school and didn't even know there was an Informatics Olympiad, and everyone at my interview group at Bristol seemed a bit surprised when there was 1 guy who had participated in it. I don't have a proper source but you know it makes sense. I'm not saying Olympiads don't test the skills of a compsci, but that not everyone is aware of them or in a school that gives a damn. -
