I never took a language at GCSE and I really regret it, but a teacher said some sixth forms might let me use free periods to get one, but I'm thinking it'll be too much work. Do you know anyone who has done this or do you have any thoughts on this?

    Hi there!

I do not know anyone, but am considering doing this for Spanish. I do French A level and think it would be useful to do a bit of Spanish on the side. The only thing I can suggest is that you get permission to do it but ensure that you give enough time to your other subjects!

I did Latin, and I didn't find it too much work. But then, I'm good at languages (doing A level French and Spanish, and probably degree too). I also did 6 AS levels, so I'm not a fair indicator.

Go with what you feel. If you feel you can do it, do it!

My sister is doing this with Latin next year.

I should imagine that as long as it does not interfere with your studies for your other subjects, and if you have a huge passion towards the language so that you are prepared to do the extra studying, you should be fine. Also, I would try learn the language before you sign up for it, so that you can see if you will enjoy it or not.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing - I took French, Latin, English Lit, Maths and Art as my AS subjects, and Ancient Greek as my gcse. Honestly, as long as didn't have any trouble with any of the languages you did at GCSE, whilst taking A-levels the GCSE on the side would seem pretty easy. It's sort of a nice hobby alongside the other things; I actually only had one lesson of it every week and didn't do any work outside the classroom. BUT I'm lucky because the other person doing it with me is around my level at languages so we move at the same pace..... I'd say you should definitely do it because I wasn't allowed to with Spanish and I think that I really could have managed it

Some places will have the option to take a language in, say, their 5th option block and if it fits in you can take it I known my sixth form do this as its needed for some unis, especially UCL. Just look on their website or call them and ask, you should be able to find one, good luck!

Some people I know did an Italian GCSE as well as Alevels, Italian is not provided as a GCSE lower down the school though so it's a sort of add on thing.
