What are your A-Level History topics? I presume Tudors, Russia, American Civil Rights...?

I read it earlier this year for my a-level course. Just out of interest, which exam board and topics are you taking? It is a pretty good read but can go off topic depending on what you are studying. If you have watched the TV series on youtube, it covers all that and some additional information. It is quite a quick read so shouldn't take you that lomg.

If you're going to be doing British history/politics from 1945 onwards, it's pretty good - has all the course content practically but in much more depth.

It pretty much got me through AS Level History.

As always I recommend Merriman's books for general history, as well as Hobsbawm's series of books. The slight issue with Hobsbawm is, given his politics, it is perpetually given a Marxist overtone which can sometimes cloud his judgement of facts.

I read part of Andrew Marr's book and I hated it tbh, I preferred Dominic Sandbrook 'Never Had it So Good' and 'White Heat' I did AQA History 'The Sixties Social Revolution' and Dominic Sandbrook was really useful so I'd definitely recommend it.

Thanks for the other suggestions! Would be useful if i could read a few more as i had a careers appointment on monday and the lady said that everyone reads Andrew Marrs book so it would be beneficial if i could increase my chances of getting into university by reading a wide range of books!

Marr is fairly populist. It is a history book but equally it is the book of a tv series and not a particularly academic one at that. It's useful for finding out what happened, but wouldn't look as great as more-academic books on a personal statement.

That's what i mean, it's mostly background knowledge to compliment my course starting in September! The more books i'm recommended the better really!

I recommend Kenneth O'Morgan's 'Britain since 1945' for your course as well - it's a more 'academic' read than Marr (who is still good in content) but if you want to read further around the subject, I do recommend it!

The book is great, however I also recommend buying the DVD series, as although information has been omitted (obviously), you do want to enjoy your summer and not be saddled reading a 600-odd page book, and it still gives a good overview!

Richard Vinen's Thatcher's Britain is really good for when you study Thatcher as it's generally really objective and quite easy to read. Also Simon Jenkins' Thatcher and Sons if you want to assess the impact from her to Major to Blair.
