    Sexism in videogames
Was wondering do you guys think video games are sexist?

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...n-video-games#

This video has been posted a lot on 4chan /v/ and other sites. The thing is I think she is just trying to be offended. For example, what is so sexist about Lara Croft? She is smart and sexy. Not only that, but you have male versions of her i.e. Nathan Drake. The thing is no one wants to look at ugly people be it male or female. Every TV ad is done by beautiful people and every TV show has above average looking characters.

So in a sense what is so sexist about Lara Croft? also what makes portal character better? she has smaller breasts?

Anyway, so do you guys think video games are sexist? As personally video games are still a largely male audience.

I think games probably are a bit sexist.

    On the other hand when I clicked your link and saw the person saying this;

As a gamer, a pop culture critic and a fan, I’m always working to balance my enjoyment of media while simultaneously being critical of problematic gender representations.
I tend to assume they're allergic to fun.

The original incarnation of Lara Croft was created to appeal to young boys. However, the new Lara Croft doesn't seem to be sexist at all.

You can't really blame the industry for the sexism -- it sells; it sells very very well. Until us gamers demand proper representation of women in games it won't change. On a different note...people seem to be labelling any violence toward a person, who happens to be female, in a game as sexist -- which is ridiculous (e.g. the controversy over the Hitman trailer).

Of course, she's undercover and asks Sam to hit her to make his escape look real.

    To Muffled Snuffles:

The exact same thing as the gif you presented. When i look at the one you posted I see a character who doesn't respect women -- I don't see it as sexist because I see the female character as an individual person, not just a "woman".

Sometimes I don't get why things are necessary... for example the massive cleavage of the matriarch in mass effect..

Argeed! Samara's outfit in Mass Effect really annoyed me. I loved her character but her design made her look so cheap.

Yeah man, this is usual bull**** by non-educated, feminist bloggers. What's sexist about making a character that appeals to males? Gaming was and still is to a extent male-dominated. That's like the people who complain about porn not catering to women thus is sexist. Maybe if women busted a nut as much as males then this "problem" wouldn't exist.

What's the differnence between this feminist writing this:

Damsel in Distress - Video #1
    The Fighting F#@k Toy - Video #2
The Sexy Sidekick - Video #3
The Sexy Villainess - Video #4
    Background Decoration - Video #5

And finding examples of the above and proclaiming sexism. And me writing:

    White knight - Video #1
    Masochism - Video #2
    Non-muscular sidekick - Video #3

etc etc and proclaiming sexism? These are all tropes I've seen in video games. ****ing bull**** man.

I don't think that Video games are sexist. They are not nearly as sexist as they used to be and they are improving. We get to play as females in Gears of War, Halo: Reach, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls games and Fallout to name a few. Females have started having larger roles in games now because Developers see that women need to be represented without being completely slutty. Gaming isn't really exclusively a "boys club" anymore.

I, for one, do enjoy games like Gears of War 3 (Clay Carmine's bicep were huge and glorious) I like having some male eye candy while playing video games

Because the men that created decided that they like big breast in women thus featured it in the games? It doesn't have to be necessary. Why do they have to be a particular ethnic? Why does this guy have to be this big?

I've been on /v/ the past few days, so I know the score, the problem they have with it is people make youtube vlogs all the time for ****ing free. What makes this women think she deserves money for making them? She's a scam artist, plain and simple.

This is a parody, and they're donating all the money to charity, which is what this despicable cow should be doing: http://www.indiegogo.com/misandryinvideogames

It's just annoying when your playing a video game to have every single female character wearing completely impractical incredibly revealing armour while all the guys strut about looking bad-ass. I wouldn't be complaining if men and women were both portrayed in the same way, either both genders should be objectified or neither. But like Miss Trololol said, they are getting better which is really good to see.

If people are so desperate that they need to look at fake women with ridiculously fake cleavage, maybe they need to stop playing video games and go out and find a real woman.

Who says men aren't be objectified? One of the characteristics of a attractive female is their breasts/ass. One of the characteristics of a attractive male is their muscle. The male action heroes typically do tend to have these muscles. Think about it, why are they acting bad-ass? Bad-ass is one of those characteristics that makes a male attractive.

This is just a case of confirmation bias.

What? Don't you have to design a character when you're creating a game? How are you supposed to form a character? By what you deem attractive. Hence, why females attractive assets tend to be their ass/breasts hence shown and males attractive assets tend to be their muscles hence shown.

You jelly of these fake women? Hahaha

I don't really think games are particularly sexist. I suppose some probably are but then you could probably find examples that work the other way and it pretty much balances out I don't think as a whole they are. And I don't particularly have a problem with the fact that lots of female characters are pretty sexualised, sex sells. I do however find it kind of creepy that it still works and people actually want to make/ see these characters in that form when there not even real. I would never think oo look that animated man is so attractive. But yeah like I said I don't think its immoral or wrong or anything just kind of weird

The activities and situations which video games show would generally cause people to have big muscles but while the men get muscles and practical armour, the women are stick thin with gigantic out of proportion breasts and asses, armour which covers barely anything and no muscle tone at all, it's completely unneeded.

I think being a bad-ass is a pretty attractive trait in women too.

I dunno much about videogames.. but MAYBE it's sexist because.. well she's too "sexy" as you say?

But why do video games have to be based on looks? It's a ****ing game.. you play the game not look and stare at the characters.. that's pron.

Nah, there are plenty of action games where they do a lot of things that require muscles yet aren't muscular. You're forgetting this is games, they can afford to be and are unrealistic a lot of times. Do you view sex as something dirty? Do you have a problem with nudity? Do you judge women who wear few clothes? If not, then why are you seeing it as something bad?

But, it generally isn't hence why women have to play the damsel in distress and the male has to play the white knight. Femininity doesn't go well with bad-assness.
