Re: Diets(Original post by Smack)
But will you actually look any better having eaten only apples for X amount of time? Every time I see pictures of women who've said something like "I followed [insert name of fad diet here] and lost X amount of pounds!", when I see their pictures, they never actually look any better ... they still have cellulite, they still have flabby bits, but they don't actually have any curves or the type of physique that men actually like ...
Charming!

Re: Diets
I did a literature review on diets (comparing low fat vs low carb diets) a few years back and my conclusion was, for short term acute weight loss, either diets would work well. None of these diets will be of any help or may have serious consequences if used in the long term, but most people won't be able to stick to it for that long anyway. For girls, low fat diet seems more ideal as most females prefer sweets whereas low carb diet may be better for men, who generally prefer meat and fatty savoury meals.
Ideally you should have your baseline health status checked by your GP and get the green light to proceed with the diet and also for your GP to pick up any potential harmful physiological effects of those diets on your health.
That said, bottom line is, see your GP about this. -

Re: Diets4 Golden Rules:(Original post by Hana_87)
I know i'm probably going to get neg repped to within an inch of my life here but oh well.
If you dramatically cut a lot from your diet and only eat fruit i.e apples or just fruit and veg for say 3 weeks, will you lose much body fat if you do no excercise?
I'm doing a PGCE and honestly mean it, i have no time to do the excercise i want to do, as much as i would like to lose weight the normal, healthy way.
I was watching 'secret eaters' on Channel 4 the other day and the woman who presents it tried 'the apple diet' where she consumed only apples for about a week and only lost 1lb! BUT this may of been Channel 4's way of trying to stop people using these faddy diets but still - can this be right?
I know this wont be a long term fix but honestly, i just want to know if these extreme diets where you are allowed to eat but only fruit/veg etc actually work.
Thank you.
1, When you are hungry, eat.
2. Eat what you want not what you think you should.
3. Eat consciously and enjoy every mouthful.
4. When you think you are full, stop.
So simple yet that's all there is to it. -

Re: DietsI'd have to eat less than that to lose weight though right? I'm going to aim for 1000 a day.(Original post by Arcanine)

Re: DietsUh, Michael Arnstein manages just fine...100mile ultramarathons run on just fruit and veg.(Original post by Hana_87)
The problem is you can't cut out everything and just eat fruit and veg if you want to excercise, so you kind of have to make a decision - exercise but still eat and lose weight that way, or eat a diet of fruit and veg but don't excercise -
Re: Diets
If you live on fruit and veg only you will last much longer than most, the vegan/vegetarian diet is considered one of the best. Mainly because you don't eat as much meats, especially red meat. also i know some high and mighty person is going to down vote me for that, don't, red meat in an excess is carcinogenic.

But try get a bit of protein as well, soya for example is low in fat and high in protein! In 50g you can get over 15g of protein, more likely around 18g but its approx, that before cooking though.
But yeah fruit/veg diet is good! good luck! -

Re: DietsAbout 6 people have said that just eating fruit and veg is most definitely not a good idea and will do more harm than good for sure. Hmmm.(Original post by Dennerers)
Haha, whats confusing you?
I'm actually going on as if i'd ever be able to stick to a diet of purely fruit and veg, i doubt it. I have a genuine addiction to chocolate. -
Re: DietsWell as long as you get key nutrients into your diet, i.e. vitamin tablets, soybeans (protein) you can live a happy, healthy lifestyle, pick up a book on nutrition in a library, it will tell you similar thing to what I'm saying, in fact open lecture cover this topic all the time, bottom line is, people have been misguided, but the vegan lifestyle is healthy. not to sound arrogant.(Original post by Hana_87)

Re: DietsPeople who eat only fruit and veg like raw vegans and fruitarians are very careful about how many calories they consume. They have to eat A LOT of fruit and veg to keep their energy levels up.(Original post by Hana_87)

I'm afraid I can't allow the discussion in this thread to go on; it's not a good example of a healthy attitude towards food.
You talk about planning to eat around 1000 calories a day, whilst still on your PGCE.
Even if you weren't on a PGCE, eating around 1000 cals a day is not enough energy. I am a teacher myself. If you want to lose weight by changing your diet, then please read the stickies in the Nutrition forum (the green one is particularly helpful).
I know you say you want to lose weight quickly because you're going away, but if you lose it slowly by a controlled lifestyle change rather than by doing a drastic crash diet like the one you plan on then you will lose weight more slowly, but you will also be more likely to keep it off, thus avoiding the need to crash diet every year before you go away. Plus if you are eating more calories from more balanced sources you will be fuller for longer, less irritable and have more energy. You will be able to do your job better.
Anyway, I'm going to close this thread. Please read the stickies and feel free to PM me or post in the Ask A Moderator forum for any further advice.
