Guild Wars 2 Society
Waddup people,
I am starting this thread so we can discuss all the GW2 stuff. Esp. when the game officially launches. (TSR Guild in making?
)
To let the ball rolling, who played both BetaWeekends already?
I played only the 1st one as I was away for the 2nd oen for the most part.

Re: Guild Wars 2 Society
Played the 2nd beta, Im definitely going to play when it's released and during the subsequent betas. The PvE is really fun and the game looks great but being an old competitive GW1 player, the PvP is a massive letdown and I really can't see it being anywhere near as good as GW1.

Re: Guild Wars 2 SocietyThe PvE was a letdown in the original GW1 and people complained about that and ArenaNet listened and made PvE a massive focus for GW2. As long as they continue to listen then I'm sure they'll improve, also the game itself is amazing and you just pay a one off fee therefore no stupid subscription fee model!(Original post by You Failed)

I still like PvP but as u said, it`s not comparable to GW1 PvP. I esp miss the Arenas in PvE world.
And I didn`t rly like PvE in GW1 but this PvE got me sucked in as I spent my 1st BWeekend leveling my Guardian which is unusual for me as I conside rmyself a PvP guy. However, it looks like in GW2 I will play mostly PvE

Re: Guild Wars 2 SocietyThey aren't listening though. The PvP fanbase for GW1 was the most loyal and knowlegable about the game and it's mechanics. They knew what worked, what didn't work, what should be fixed to make the game better etc and ArenaNet ignored them completely. The PvE in GW1 wasn't meant to be the focus, it was designed to be a stepping stone/training ground to lead into the PvP. The idea was the game was meant to become a competitive e-sport and this would have worked, the potential was there, the core mechanics, gameplay and format were amazing (8v8 GvG). It was complex, had depth, required team and individual skill, and it was balanced. However, they ruined it by not listening to the players, they balanced the game badly and didn't fix what they were told was broken, they introduced stupid classes and too many new, OP skills, which then needed further balancing and caused massive powercreep. Most importantly, they didn't promote the game for what it was, they didn't push the PvP hard enough, they actually stopped hosting world tournaments and then stopped issuing cash prizes altogether and so a lot of the good teams quit.(Original post by Wick3d)

Now, in GW2, instead of refining the PvP from GW1 and taking a system, format and gameplay, that at its core was completely unique and had opportunity to be very competitive and successful game, they ruined it. Again. Rather than building on what made GW1 successful, they removed essentially all of the good game mechanics and skills. The skills and mechanics that actually gave the PvP the depth and skill in the first place, they've changed the format from one which was tactical and entertaining to a standard, bland cap points system, which is boring and has emphasis only on running around the map to get to the points. The skills have no depth either, they range from doing damage, to doing more damage, to buffing damage and then healing a bit. Compare these to GW1 skills which had an incredible amount of depth, Bulls Strike for Warriors, Diversion and Shame for Mesmers, Guardian for Monks and so on and so forth.
It seems to me Anet had no idea what made the PvP so good in GW1. The players did and they have told Anet numerous times, but they don't want to listen, they think they know what made the game good, but in reality, they don't have a clue. So, they push on, trying to fix things, trying to reinnovate to make things better and all they're doing is dumbing things down, removing everything that was unique and generally getting further and further from that magic that was GvG.
Like I said though, they have managed to make what appears to be a good PvE game. Albeit, it's not far from the other generic MMOs out there. But hey, that's what sells and they know that. -
Re: Guild Wars 2 SocietyI think that's is what ArenaNet were gunning for in the first place for GW2 because like you said that is what sells. Alot of people don't like PvP due to the amount of skill it requires. Don't worry just sit tight and wait for PlanetSide 2.(Original post by You Failed)

Re: Guild Wars 2 SocietyIt feels like you're in the minority. The majority seem to love what they've done with GW2 and couldn't care less about PvP mechanics; after all, PvE players make up a large proportion of the player base.(Original post by You Failed)

I think ANet went for a 'WoW competitor' rather than a 'GW1 sequel'. They used what they learned from GW1 and decided to try and completely renovate the MMO market, and in a nutshell, they've done that for PvE. The possibility of course is there for PvP, but I'm assuming they're taking it one step at a time, for the most part.
As far as a release goes... I think August is the best bet. There should be one or two more BWE's (max), and they can't possibly leave it as late as September/October judging from the time they began pre-purchases. IIRC they mentioned they wanted to avoid September (Aion's release in Sept was crippling), so this rules out Oct-Dec (since this would be a stupid amount of time to wait for the pre-purchasers who bought the game in April). Considering there should be a month between the release date announcement and the actual release, I'd say the announcement should come mid June, and release at end of August.Last edited by wanderlust.xx; 17-06-2012 at 14:19. -
Re: Guild Wars 2 SocietyYeah, I realise its probably what they were aiming for, their claims though were completely different. As the guy below me said, they did and do keep claiming they want to create a competitive e-sport and so is incredibly stupid that they've gone so off tangent from what they had in GW1.(Original post by Wick3d)

Yeap, they have said that and they've completely gone the wrong way about it.(Original post by THESHade)
They said that they wanna create a competetive eSport game ...
Just sayin -
Re: Guild Wars 2 SocietyThis is what annoys me. I know I'm in the minority, the hardcore PvP fanbase is always going to be the minority. They however normally, and were in this case too, the most loyal and knowledgable group. They are the players that play the most, they're the players that will actually know which fixes and improvements will enhance the game, they know what makes it good and what makes it bad. They're the players who will actually take an active interest in the game and improving it, as opposed to the majority, who are casual players and will log in for an hour a day, do some stuff and then log out again.(Original post by wanderlust.xx)
It feels like you're in the minority. The majority seem to love what they've done with GW2 and couldn't care less about PvP mechanics; after all, PvE players make up a large proportion of the player base.
So to then completely ignore this player base when creating your next game, is incredibly frustrating. There's absolutely no reason why Anet could not have created the game they have now, but with a much, much better PvP system. Why cap points? Why would you choose such a boring game type? Why would you make it so that it's more beneficial to simply run around the map and avoid skirmishes? How is that in any way, shape or form a good idea to have in PvP?
You say that a large majority couldn't care less about PvP mechanics, that's fair enough but if they don't care about them, that's no reason to ignore those who do care about them and make them awful. As I said, if they had listened to the PvP playerbase, there's no reason why they could not have had both a successful PvE playerbase and a very successful e-sport on their hands. It's not that they haven't put effort into the PvP, so its not that. In fact they're trying very hard already to make the game an e-sport, they're just doing it in completely the wrong way and they don't even seem to realise just how bad it is, because as usual and as they did in GW1 (which lead to the PvP being ruined), they are not listening to those who actually know. -
Re: Guild Wars 2 Society
I have played in all the beta weekends so far
Not a huge ammount though but I really enjoyed it, it's breaking the mmo mould a little bit it's nice to see something different, I played the original GW too for a long period of time however I am enjoying GW2 more I'd say the combat is a lot of fun.

Re: Guild Wars 2 SocietyI wouldn't worry much. For veteran players, GW2's story and lore will be more in depth and we'll recognise certain stuff when we're exploring but it's probably all going to be explained in game anyway.(Original post by Snagprophet)
I'm looking forward to this. A play for free MMO is in my best interests as a uni student at the moment. I like all the classes and races. Never played GW1 though. -
Re: Guild Wars 2 SocietyThat`s more about just trying to log in then playing(Original post by You Failed)
Just in case anyone is interested, there's a stress test on the 27th of this month, so if you've prepurchased, you can play
Personally, I am not gonna even bother. -
Re: Guild Wars 2 SocietyNot really, you will get to play the entire day. It's purely to see how the servers handle the strain. There will be probably be fewer people trying to log on than the last beta weekend, and that was fine.(Original post by THESHade)

So I stopped paying attention. I might play a bit.
