Mathematics Applicants 2013
Thought I'd get the ball rolling since there's been a few other 2013 applicant threads popping up!
Say what A-levels you're taking, predicted grades and what Universities you're looking at
A-levels: Maths, Economics, Law, Media Studies (most likely to take up further maths AS in year 13)
Predicted AS: ABBB
Unis: got list of 11 to look at but most favourite is sheffield at the moment
-
Re: Mathematics Applicants 2013yeah doubt anyone will know them yet since we haven't got our results or anything!(Original post by As_Dust_Dances_)
A Levels: Further Maths, Maths, Philosophy & Ethics and German.
Predicted Grades: Actually don't know them..
Unis: Northumbria (Offer ABB)

Re: Mathematics Applicants 2013
A Levels: Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, General Studies (AS Only)
AS Predicted Grades: A, A, B, A
Provisional A2 Predicted Grades: A*, A, B
Unis: Current top 5 (in order) are Edinburgh, Cardiff, UEA, Heriot-Watt and Aberystwyth, but knowing me that will change quite quickly. Well, all but Edinburgh. If it's possible I definitely want to go there

Re: Mathematics Applicants 2013
Help please, my son is taking 4 A Levels, Math, Biology, Physics, English, he hoping to get A*AAA, he wants to go to bath to study Maths, is there any point applying if he didn't take Further Maths, he's thinking that he may take a gap year and take an AS in further and then re apply?
Your help would be appchiated. -

hey, I don't personally know the entry requirements for Bath and it would be easier if you just search up the university website to see. From the knowledge that I know, top universities will certainly want further maths so if he wants to study at other top 10-20 unis then it would be advisable to take a gap year and take up further maths -
Re: Mathematics Applicants 2013I also like the sound of Heriot-Watt! It looks really nice and the course sounds good but I won't be able to visit until the "applicant visits" as its too far(Original post by 03hope03)

plus the city is amazing and really vibrant
it's also too far for me to go to an open day, though I have spent a fair amount of time in edinburgh over the past two years visiting my now ex, but I still wish I could go to one :/ just out of cursory, where do you live? I'm in warwickshire so its about 6 hours by train from my house, or 8 ish hours by car :/

Re: Mathematics Applicants 2013You can phone/email the universities he'd like to apply to. I'm sure they'd be happy to help.(Original post by Oneilly)

Re: Mathematics Applicants 2013
Yay someone finally made this group!

A-levels: Maths, Further Maths, Physics and English Literature
Predicted AS: Not sure yet, don't get told yet because i'm still doing maths modules and they don't want our predicted grades to affect how we do.
Unis: Nottingham, Birmingham, not really sure at the moment.Last edited by BumbleB33; 19-01-2013 at 22:51. -
Re: Mathematics Applicants 2013Actually, I'd double check going by train, because I'm fairly sure that from when I used to go up there, Virgin ran a train that was only 5/ 5.5 hours from London to Edinburgh(Original post by shorttstuff)
Aw man that sounds awesome! I live in London so it'll be around 8/9 hours on the train or 20 mins by plane
I remember that because it was my favourite train as it was only 4 hours to Birmingham from Edinburgh and it was more spacious and cleaner than Cross Country trains
Hm, I've read a few maths books that are on the Oxford and Cambridge reading lists, and they've been incredibly interesting. I'm going to reread them over summer though so that if I get an interview for anywhere I can talk about them(Original post by Amanda.P)
I'm just wondering, what have people been doing to prepare themselves for applying to uni, as in things to put on their personal statements? I've realised I've got to write it this summer and i haven't read any of the books I need to.
But i've been to lectures and a maths headstart course and i'm doing an epq related to maths.
What about everyone else?
I've also been acting as a TA in a Year 9 maths class once a week and took a few of their lessons, which has been really interesting, and I assist in a Year 7 science club
I'm probably going to put down about the SMC and STMC as well, and probably the Pink Kangaroo that I got into in Year 11. I think your epq would be a really good thing to write about
I wanted to do one but my school wouldn't let me -_-

Re: Mathematics Applicants 2013Yeah, I just checked and its 6 hours on the train (including the train from my house to central London) so not bad(Original post by 03hope03)

I have some questions if you don't mind
Which universities did you eventually choose as your Firm and Insurance?
Also STEP - how did you find it? What sort of things did you do to prepare?
