    Work Experience
    Hi guys,

I'm trying to get some work experience for over the summer,
I really want to try and get some experience working for a large firm in the city of London, In Canary Wharf in particular.

I was wondering as to how I'd go about asking for some work experience in such large companies. It's not as if you can email the CEO or whatever.

A law firm named Clifford Chance who are based within Canary Wharf have their lawyers profiles on their website, should I email a lawyer directly asking for W.E? or what?

are you kidding? i believe Clifford Chance is a magic circle law firm, it would be near impossible to get work experience there if you didnt have any contacts within the law firm.

most firms usually have a specific e-mail address where you can send your CV to be considered for work experience and such, alternatively, you can ring the firm and ask to speak to someone in HR, who could then talk you through what needs to be done.

but my advice to be to look into much smaller law firms, you have a much higher chance of work experience in smaller firms than the HUGE ones who probably recieve tons and tons of e-mails from students just like you everyday!

good luck! its crazy competitive out there but dont give up easily!

The big problem with cold-emailing CC is they have structured, formal procedures for applying for work experience. You won't impress them by ignoring their website and the info there. If you're a uni student, you'll be expected to apply in the usual way. That said, you need not have contacts to apply successfully for work experience or indeed a job at this or any other magic circle firm.

    Hi!
This year I'm applying for a Law degree and so I asked my school to find a Law work experience for me. They did it, but I still need to write a covering letter. Can you please e-mail me a sample of it etc cos I don't even know how to start and what to mention. I'm a Sixth former and haven't had any Law work experience before.

Ok. Sorry, I forget that some people on this board are very early in their careers/education. What stage are you at?

Most big firms do not do summer work exp stuff formally (unless you're at the vacation scheme stage). So unless you know somebody there there is little chance.

Some big firms do run some kind of work exp for school leavers. Pinsent Masons do for sure, and I believe Irwin Mitchell and Dickinson Dees do something similar.

If none of these are available, your best bet is to approach small (very small) commercial firms or high street practices.

Try entering a bar trial competition. It will definitely give you a (a little) taste of becoming a lawyer. i mean if you get work experience great, but are you sure they wont just make you photocopy and take notes for them?
