M1 significant figures

If i put more than one of my answers down to more than 3 sf. E.g. For 3-4 questions. Do I get penalised more than once?
My teacher told me that if this was the case, I would only lose 1 mark for accuracy throughout the whole paper. Can anyone clarify?
If it tells you how many S.F.'s to put it to I would think you's loose one each time. If it doesn't I would have thought you'd only loose one across the whole paper.

Did you do Edexcel?
Lose a mark for every mistake.
