21yr old needing advice on Access Courses
Hii all.. I am just wanting some advice.. at the minute im 21yr old and working full time in a GP surgery but wanting to study pharmacy at uni. I would need to do an access course as i have bad grades but just want to know how hard is the course? if i pass the course is there a chance i may still not get into uni? how lenient are unis on accepting students onto pharmacy courses?

Re: 21yr old needing advice on Access Courses
The Access course does not gaurantee direct university entry. For a course like pharmacy, you need to achieve most likely a distinction which is the highest grade. Be sure to have a back up plan as there are plenty of other careers that you can get into with the access course. I would also advice you to contact colleges quickly as places for these courses normally fill up very quickly. Also, you will have to cut down your hours at the GP surgery to have a good chance of gaining a good grade.
Hope this helps. -
Re: 21yr old needing advice on Access Courses
Hi
I just finished an Access to Business course last week, and I'll be starting Uni in Sept.
Entry onto the course was fairly easy, exam and an interview. Exam was pretty straight forward, basic arithmetic and English. The course it self was not difficult at all, although you will have to dedicate a lot of your time to it.
No one is ever going to be guaranteed to place in Uni, you'll have to do your research and see what requirements the Universities demand. -
Re: 21yr old needing advice on Access Courses
I have just finished my access course and I can only stress one thing talk to the University you want to go to as they may not accept an access course for pharmacy. A class mate of mine found out that her University would not accept an access qualification for a nutrition degree as it did not cover a sufficient amount of chemistry. If that is true of a nutrition course I think it may be true of a pharmacy degree.

Thanks guyss.. ive checked through most unis and entry requirements on their websites and a lot of them seem to accept access for pharmacy.. my preferred one is sunderland and they ask for distinctions in biology and chemistry ! Just waiting to start the course now and get the ball rolling!

Re: 21yr old needing advice on Access CoursesThe University of Wolverhampton accept only 1 Acess course:Access to HE (Medicine and Health Professions) course from Stafford College, New College, Telford and Newcastle under Lyme College ONLY. You will need 45 credits at distinction including further chemistry, remaining 15 credits at merit or above.(Original post by DH_101)

Do be careful. Don't waste a year (and lots of cash) getting a useless quali.
