I want to do chemistry at University and have just finished my final AS level exams:
My predicted Grades are:
Chemisty - A
Biology - A
Maths- A
Physics -A/B
and am predicted AAA at A2 for chemistry, biology, and maths
At gcse I got :
B- English Language
A- English Literature
A*- Geography
A- Chemistry
A- Biology
A- Physics
A- ICT
A- Religous education
A and Ab - double award healths and social
A- Mathematics
D - Latin
D- photography/art
I didn't try as much as I should have at gcse but am trying very hard now at college for my A-levels, could you please advise me on what universities would be good for taking chemistry and which ones I have a good chance of getting into.
Thank you, any help at all would be appreciated as me and my familiy know nothing about university
ALSO: what kind of work experience can I do ?Last edited by baconbicycles; 17-06-2012 at 12:32. -

Virtually all of them. Rule out Oxbridge and places like Imperial, Durham and Bristol because they are asking for A* Any of the Scottish ones would do - in fact most of them - have a look at http://www.thecompleteuniversityguid...gs?s=Chemistry for the entry requirements

Re: How and What Uni's could I apply for with my grades? thanks :) (CHEMISTY)Imperial and UCL are both good universities based in London. There there are always the red brick universities: University of : Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Bristol and Manchester. They are considered "top" universities. Then others worth looking into as well, which are very good universities: Warwick, Durham and St Andrews. I may have missed some off but use the league tables.(Original post by baconbicycles)

Re: How and What Uni's could I apply for with my grades? thanks :) (CHEMISTY)not that i'm doing chemistry or do i plan to do it but university is a very personal choice. most will say for you to aim for the more prestigious univeristy you are able to with your grades, but that still is quite vague. do some reading around and pick a handful that you fancy then go to open days to see what theyre like. prestige isn't everything but you should aim as high as you reasonably can whilst still picking a university you are happy with.(Original post by baconbicycles)
Thank you! which uni's would you recommend ?
things to take into account that i can think of right now (in my opinion):
-teaching/department quality. some universities are better at certain subjects. you can view different tables which rank unis based on subject. although these aren't accurate they give you a rough idea.
-research opportunities. find out what kind of level of research is going on for that subject in that university. russel group unis are considered the top 20 unis and they get given grants for extra research. if you like the idea of doing chemistry or chemistry type sciences after your degree you may consider this.
-city/area you will be living in. some might not like to live in london, partly because of cost and partly just personal reasons.
-distance. if you live in london then edinburgh is going to be a treck. dont let distance be a high factor overall but being <50 miles from home makes trips to see family for birthdays or any events a bit easier. on the other hand you might want to get away so its a personal choice.
those are a few i just thought of. theres plenty more but reading a university guide might help. ask around at school for help deciding.

Re: How and What Uni's could I apply for with my grades? thanks :) (CHEMISTY)I have a niece at York - loves it. My son has friends at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, KCL and Nottingham - also loving it. If I were you, I would be doing the open days. If you don't get the required grades take a gap year and repeat. We need scientists like you - and you are choosing a tough subject so it is important to have all the basics before you start.(Original post by baconbicycles)

may sound like a stupid question but how do I find out when open days are?

Choose your universities very carefully, remember you will be there for 3 years. Don't forget to consider factors other than ranking such as location, price.

Go to the Warwick, durham, UCL open days, with grades like that you can go to the very best uni's. Have a look at imperial/Oxbridge if you think you can get am A* or too and try to get your predicted grades raised if you can/want

Other good places to look at as 4th and 5th choices would be nottingham, Southampton, Exeter, Leicester and St. Andrews.
Have a look at the league tables for overall and for chemistry, and through the prospectus' of some uni's to see if you get a good feel for any ofthem
Good luck, the best advice I can give is don't undersell yourself like a lot of people do! -
