Re: Publishing and English
Hey,
I've just graduated and I studied Publishing with English (which is turning into Publishing and English next year).
It was pretty good, although I think I would have preferred to have done straight English looking back; not everyone on my course feels the same way though.
I'm not sure if it's exactly the same next year, but we were in the Information Science department and I thought we had way too many filler modules from that dept. Some of them were quite interesting such as looking at the impact the internet has had on society, looking at virtual worlds like World of Warcraft and Second life. Others were insanely boring like Information and Knowledge Management. Either way they felt a bit irrelevant to the course.
The other thing is that they pretty much hammer home from day one that Publishing is a dying industry in a traditional sense. It's a dynamic and interesting industry but traditional publishing is sort of on the wrong side of it because the internet is changing everything. It's also pretty damn hard to get a job at a publishing house.
We did have some really good modules though. Brand, design and write a business plan for your own magazine and we had a whole module on Photoshop and InDesign (you get to create a book cover and a newsletter design).
If you like English you'll love the English stuff. There's a massive variety of modules. The Publishing stuff is a bit hit and miss though, and a lot of the modules are more geared towards business and sociology. If you like all of the above then it's probably the course for you.
I wouldn't say I gained any course specific skills, to be honest. I've learned more just from being at Uni in general.
Hope this helped. -
Re: Publishing and English
Hi,
I've just completed the first year of Publishing with English and found exactly the same as the above post, most of the Information Science modules are fillers.
I think it all depends on what you enjoy, I'm now leaving to go to do an english course at a different university and I think people mostly interested in English would find some of the modules a bit boring.
if the course is changing to joint honours though this might be better, if you like web design and computer based work then the Information Science modules will be really interesting. -
Re: Publishing and English
Been a while since this thread was alive, but I've applied for this course in 2013 (sent application off on Tuesday). I quite like the sound of the course - including the technical side, but my personal statement was entirely about English. I spoke a lot about Publishing, but not anything to do with computers and stuff really, even though I've always been good with them. I just didn't want to put any other unis off. What are the chances they'll accept me?
And, honestly, would I get on with people here if I'm not at all sporty? -
Re: Publishing and EnglishI'm afraid I know nothing about this course so can't answer that part of your question, but yes, don't worry about not being sporty at all because loads of people aren't(Original post by Emly)
