Which is the Most Dangerous Threat to Society?
    Patriotism / pseudo-Patriotism

Out of the above two, which one would you consider the most dangerous threat to society?

Personally, I think that old fashioned patriotism has been weakened somewhat, and it seems to only pervade as much in the military and perhaps amongst the older generation i.e., 70+.

I think that pseudo-Patriotism - which involves football hooliganism and chanting, racism, independence from another country, royal celebrations, the Olympics, advertising, merchandise, forces recruitment, the BNP, the SNP, EDL, and propaganda from media and government, and so forth - now seems the most dangerous if kept unchecked.

I agree with Racism, Football hooliganism and extreme right wing parties, but what is dangerous about celebrating the Olympics and our Monarch?

Your definitions are ridiculous. You can't group racism and football hooliganism with Royal celebrations and the Olympics. Sadly, it's people like you who perpetuate the myth that pride in one's country is something to be ashamed of and abolished.

It seems pseudo-racism is essentially 'everything Martyn hates'. There's no scientific definition offered.

Football hooliganism is usually white people attacking white people.

Of course you can! They are all means to shore up patriotic fervour. In royal celebrations people often wave the British flag in honour of the royal establishment which is suredly a mark of the British Empire and is tied to the country. The irony is that the Royals are Germans and Greeks, however. Still, with much flag waving, showing national pride in one's country, the land as the 'New Jerusalem', the preaching of military supremicism, and much chanting about Rule Britania, and not to mention, all this going on at the Olympics as well when teams represent their country, when they stand proudly looking at the sky as they hear (or sing) their country's national anthem, all of this is either a means to shore up patriotic feelings, to keep it alive, or to sublimate it into something much more dangerous. The media and the government are all implicit in this.

What I am saying is that the real monster of patriotism could break-out at any moment. All that is needed is the right ingredients. When there is a need for a war, the motive of government and media is to shore up support for it by stressing Nationalism and Patriotism. It is not improbable that certain influential people want war and to that extent actively do all they can to stoke the fires of patriotic fervour, to rouse the rabble so-to-speak. The Nazis did it, and the British Empire did it, and many people in our society today are nostalgic for it.

I offered a phenomenological definition. Or at least I think I did.

Cybermen are destroying the fabric of western society with their strange belief systems and constantly trying to 'upgrade' good, decent, human women. We should restrict their breeding (upgrading) and ban their Apple stores.. Would they allow Microsoft stores in their countries? No.

One thing you fail to see, is that Patriotism in moderation is a very good thing, as it can unite a country under one banner and gives people a sense of duty to their fellow countrymen and their country itself.

If they could have gotten their hands on a nuclear device instead of a couple of planes, Manhattan would be a smouldering pile of radioactive rubble.

Pseudo-patriotism, but it's only the fault of the people who effectively banned normal patriotism only to have it replaced with something more sinister. The Nazis were a product of a society which had no self confidence.
