Benefits for striking low-paid workers to be axed

What do you think? Good idea or simply a move to crush strikes? -
Re: Benefits for striking low-paid workers to be axedThey do have their right to defend their conditions and pay at work - it's called engaging with your employer in a constructive discussion rather than striking.(Original post by Scumbaggio)
Awful Really, you should have the right to defend your conditions/pay at work. -
Re: Benefits for striking low-paid workers to be axed
As I understand it, at the minute if one of these low paid workers goes on strike, as they receieve benefit to top up their income, this will increase to make up the shortfall.
Under the proposed system, their benefit will remain the same, so all they loose is the pay from going on strike?
Well that seems fair to me. I fail to see why tax payers should fund people going out on strike.
If you choose to withdraw your labour, for what logical reason should you be paid for it?Last edited by AlexInWonderland; 17-06-2012 at 19:39. -
Re: Benefits for striking low-paid workers to be axedYou do indeed. But it's ludicrous that you can choose not to go to work and the government will then compensate you for that.(Original post by Scumbaggio)

For all intent and purpose, if you strike while on certain benefits then as it currently stands, strikes are paid days off for you. Completely wrong in my opinion. -

Re: Benefits for striking low-paid workers to be axedIf you choose to strike, you shouldn't get anything to make up for it. Seems logical to me.
And you shouldn't receive any benefit to make for the shortfall, one wonders why this wasn't changed before.(Original post by Scumbaggio)
You don't get paid if you are on strike.Last edited by meenu89; 17-06-2012 at 19:53. -
Re: Benefits for striking low-paid workers to be axedWell currently you do if you receive this benefit, as a reduction in employment pay corresponds with an increase in benefit. All this means is you would be getting paid by someone else- the taxpayer who really has no business funding an industrial dispute.(Original post by Scumbaggio)

Re: Benefits for striking low-paid workers to be axed
If I choose to strike then I have to accept that I will lose pay as a consequence
That is never easy and impacts whatever your wages are
In severe cases Unions will have funds to assist people who are striking ... I cannot see why benefits should be paid to make up the difference
