What is there to do for a 16-year-old over summer?
    Hello everyone!

My little sister has just finished her last GCSE and now she has nothing to do for a few months. The thing is, she doesn't actually have any friends at the moment. I don't want her to sit at home and be bored as it can't be good for either her physical or mental health!

She's very very shy and going to a new college in September. I want for her to be able to do something somewhat constructive over summer, something that will help boost her confidence.

She already has a part time job, and we've arranged to go to rock climbing classes once a week together. I'm trying to spend time with her but we share very few interests so I'm finding it SO boring!

So, is there anything free or cheap that a shy 16-year-old can do this summer? I just have no idea where to look!

    Thanks!

It's lovely that you're taking her rock climbing
Assuming you live in the UK? In which case, take a train with her to a random village or city and perhaps explore a bit? Eventually, she might be confident enough to go on her own - this, however some youths may call it a 'loner' activity, is great for confidence building! Exploring new and unfamiliar places will encourage her to leave her comfort zone, breath some fresh air, and generally be mentally and physically healthy. Well, that's the kind of stuff I did at that age. I wasn't allowed to go too far, but (living in Leeds) I went for days to York, Ilkley, etc..

Edit; I also see you've mentioned 'free or cheap'. Short distance train fares can be really cheap! Well cheaper than bus fares when booked in advance!

First off, you are an absolutely lovely person, you care about your sister and simply want the best for her (wish my brother was like that )

I live in London too and I always drag my brother to go cycling around the city most of the time (its good for me and him physically and i try and bond with him) so it will be a really good thing for the pair of you!
You could also take her to a party and help her socialise.
You could also sign her up with a club (any club, maybe martial-arts) she is bound to make friends with people! you could also give her tips to socialise.

tbh, I don't mind helping, I live in London myself and i finished my GCSE's - you could sign her up to "the Challenge" (im going there!)
more info here http://www.the-challenge.org/ its an unbeatable experiance and you meet loads of friends, you basically stay in a group of 7 for 3 weeks, i heard its an amazing experience plus you make LOADS of friends.

but seriously, I'm not a shy person and im sure you're not too, just take her out and make her socialise.

Coz u live in London maybe u could go into central London and tour (assuming u haven't done it in a while) or maybe she could make day camp for people or even help local charity organisation.
Try encourage her to ring her closet schoolmate and go out together to a park or something
I think ur a very sweet n caring sister
Good luck finding things for her to do

since she's 16 you could probably send her on one of those PGL camp things, itll give her something to do and may help her over come her shyness and make some friends ? plus theres some abroad to

Thank-you, these suggestions are great! I'll talk to her tomorrow and see if she's interested.

She really is shy though, so I'm a little worried...

Get a job maybe and go out and enjoy herself by attending the cinema or eating lunch out, etc?

If she likes rock climbing here's another vote for trying the challenge. It has that kind of stuff in the first week and is a great way for groups to bond.

To be honest I don't think you'll be able to make her socialise when your always there, sure spend time together and encourage her to go out and that but she needs to come out of her shell in her own time. Joining any local youth club/group might help?

Perhaps your friends may have younger siblings her age who might be interested in going out with her?
