I got added by a lot of pages that promote club nights, so I imagine you might not be aware of certain things going on - but then if you're out enough and have friends who go out then you'll be aware of all social things. So I doubt it would be a disadvantage not having it.

You wouldn't be missing out on anything meaningful, but it is a handy way to keep in touch with people, especially if you're going to uni and going to be meeting lots of new people at first. Also, most parties etc. are organised through facebook and people just invite everyone through facebook as it's easy and almost everyone has it. That said, 99% of what people post on facebook is a complete waste of time, so no, you wouldn't miss anything of great importance.

Maybe start one when you get to university and see how you get on with it?

I would say so, yes. It's the most popular method people use to arrange events, so you'd probably miss out on getting invitations to things.

I find the advantages of it make up for the disadvantages.

In terms of getting work done, it's probably an advantage not to have facebook. I doubt you will miss out on much through not having it.

    Yes.
I think facebook is a vital tool at university.

You can chat with friends on your course about work instantly.
Usually your hall will have a facebook page to update you about things going on.
And when you meet new friends a good way to remember their names and for them to remember you is via facebook and those in the hall facebook page.

I'd say it is a must.

It depends on what you use it for.

Some students set up groups for their modules on facebook, share sources and experiences, etc. and use it as a learning tool.

Of course, the vast majority of facebook is used for social networking. This can be just as important for students as study - especially during undergraduate years.

I'd set one up and see how it goes. If you don't like it, you can delete it. No big deal.

Yeah I'd agree with this (though I don't have first hand experience). And I do most of my chatting through it (barely text) which would become more useful still for talking to people back home

I agree. Not that you need a Facebook account to have an excellent uni experience and make lots of friends, it does make it a little easier to keep in contact. A friend of mine doesn't have facebook, which is absolutely fair enough, however it does sometimes mean she'll be forgotten for a little while as she isn't on the 'friend list' to invite to events. We'll still text her to tell her of course, but facebook is more instant and automatic.

Bearing that in mind, if you don't want a facebook account, don't get one! Communicating by phone is more personal anyway

they don't let you in unless you can produce membership cards for Facebook, Myspace, Piczo, Bebo, LinkedIn, ratemyturban.com and Anonymous.

The only reason I use it is because there are some people I like talking to who I know without Facebook I'd never see, and probably never text/call. Organising events has never been a massive thing, people tend to invite me personally because a lot of people ignore their event invites anyway. You could always try it out and perhaps sync it with your phone/email so if anyone gets in touch, you don't have to log on every day to check and inevitably end up trawling through loads of status updates.

We had to do a group work and it was such a hassle because one of the members didn't have facebook and her phone was very old. You don't need to use it daily just make one for important cases.

My phone's old - fairly sure people can still call me on it.

OP: I did university without Facebook, but there are times when it would have come in handy. Depends on what you prioritise, really - I don't feel happy with social networking sites, so for me the disadvantages outweighed the advantages.

im ive seen this exact same thread several times before...
but no not really, might make it a tiny bit harder to find out about what events and such are going down as many are organised through fb but the beauties of word of mouth and texting come into play there

I deleted my Facebook for the first four months of this year and missed it for the first two days before wondering what on earth I did on there all the time.

I only got it back because people kept bugging me about it... I'll probably delete it again before long. I prefer Twitter in any case.

EDIT: If you are a first year I think you'd probably miss it a bit more than iof you were a final year (like i am) when you deleted it. Seeing as your first year is far more social than your last. In my experience anyway.

For some people, it really is necessary because that's how all society things are organised - in my society, everything - practices, socials, competitions - are organised on facebook, and you simply can't get by without it.

And as most of next year's flatmates aren't people that I'm currently living with, we use a facebook group to communicate - you can't really get that group chat between 7 people via text.

It's also useful for keeping in touch with friends from home, and I find that it also helped me to remember who's who during freshers week, just because it helps you put a face to a name!
