3D Digital Animation BA HONS Students
Just thought I'd set this up so that all students for this course (2012 entry) know someone when we get to uni in september. I should be studying the course this year, conditional offer but points I have already exceed the offer. so yeah, hopefully some 3D student find this thread!

    Hi,

I have not applied for 3d animation at herts yet, however i hope to apply through extra/clearing. Just wondering if you attended an interview and whether you got straight onto the course without having to do a foundation degree as the course details suggest you might have to.

    Thanks

Hey! I have an unconditional offer for that exact course, so I will definitely be going in September!

What career are you hoping to get into after finishing uni?

Personally, I had three interviews, Middlesex, Glamorgan and Herts. Herts was the hardest. I walked the other two, as they did not require me to have much 3D digital art, and my drawings and other art from my completed A levels in my portfolio was good enough. However, since I didn't have much 3D art at all, Herts was a lot tougher. They like to make sure that you like doing it (so that you don't decide that it isn't for you) so they want to see examples. Therefore, they said if I could show them that I had tried out Maya/3DSmax, then they would let me onto the course (my drawing ability was good enough as they had seen from my portfolio). So I emailed them some screenshots of some quick models that I made and they gave me an offer.

I finished my A levels last August then took a year out to work, and I didn't need to do a foundation course at all. Its just if you don't have the technical ability in art then it would be very beneficial to do a foundation course first.

Basically if you have the grades, but not the ability, they will want you to do a foundation course. If you have the ability, you will not need to do one. By ability I mean in art, not in Maya/3DSMax/etc. (though it is very beneficial). I am a total Maya noob and I got in haha. Good luck, and maybe we'll see you in September.

I applied with an art a/s (which I've now dropped lol) and photography a/s which ive completed. art wise I wasnt very strong at all but 3d wise I'm alot better, at my interview I had a good chat with mark wallman who basically just said to me draw draw and draw and i should be fine as points wise I alrdy have more than needed even without photography/art. I will say this even though I've only been doing 3d for about 2/3years self taught, you REALLY have to like 3d/ visual art i believe or else you just wont learn anything. also if you can try and get maya (free for students from autodesk website) and start learning the basics an such, herts/most other uni's I visited didnt actlly use 3dsmax.

    Well done on your offer!

    Thanks for your reply.
I have been using maya and have got to grips with the basics. I have started to learn to animate objects. I have an A* in Art at A-level. I currently have two offers for Nursing which i would have to decline in order to apply for 3d animation at herts through extra or clearing-which would be a huge risk as they may not offer me a place.

Thanks for your reply. I have only found an interest in animation over the last few months but i have become obsessed. The work and detail produced is amazing. I would love to produce work like that. Trying to self teach myself and am on the way but it can only go so far i think-although it sounds like you are doing well.

Thanks and you're welcome. If you had applied normally through UCAS, it sounds like you had a good chance of getting in, you barely need 260 UCAS points iirc. That being said, to turn down two offers for the chance (not a certainty) is a big risk. Especially seeing as Hertfordshire is quite a desirable place to go for Animation (after Bournemouth).

But, if you definitely want to do Animation over Nursing (which is quite the career change I must say haha) then don't do Nursing just for the sake of definitely being able to do it. But I'd suggest you look at other places (Bournemouth, Glamorgan, etc.) to apply to as well, as it is clearing and you aren't guaranteed a place. Have you thought about anywhere else?

Oh and btw, if you haven't checked it out already this thread: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show...uter+animation is very good in regards of advice like that, it has info on the top unis, portfolio advice, stuff like that. And Moid is head of animation at Herts, and he comments all of the time there! Check it out!

Aha yes it is! i am very arty but also have interests in science- the careers match my alevels- Art and Human biology. I only want to go to a local university and therefore am limited in my choices.
Thanks for the link i will have a look - i have just looked at your link and am so grateful that you told me about 'Moid' i have been able to talk to him and it is extremely helpful! thank you!

Haha that's weird, the exact same thing happened to me with regards to the interview, I also had to take a year out to do some 3D work. I'm still pretty bad at using maya though... but when I was visiting hertfordshire, some VFX dude at the SU told me I just needed to know the basics entering the course, so i learnt the basics and now I'm looking forward to it!

Tis indeed, when i read what you said it seemed like something I had wrote! Would you be on deviant art or something? I'd like to have a wee juke at some class mates work, see what the competition is like

Ohhh I see. I didn't even want to go to uni after A levels, I just decided to get a job, then got sick of it and applied WAY to late so it was definately going to be an art course for me. Now we have triple the fees. Yay us! :'( Haha Competition! Ah dA, yes, though I haven't drawn much lately/uploaded anything lately, here it is: http://ferny654.deviantart.com/

Yeah I got pretty lucky and got a job where my Mum works. Yeah I can't wait, I'm local because I don't wanna move THAT far from home, but I guess if you're moving country to do it thats a whole new awesome life experience I just want to quit my job and start NOW! And thanks dude, yours are pretty nice, I really like the four horsemen one, really catches the eye

Yeah man, it should be fun. The only downside is that I don't know anyone going, so I'll be a loner for a bit at the start... do you have any chums going aswell? Sounds good dog, I hear our course is pretty worthwhile with regards to getting jobs in the industry. Cheers man!

Nope, I won't have any friends there. I'll know 1 or 2 people in the year above, but not well enough to socialise with etc. I'm looking forwards to that! New start and that And yeah I heard 60% get hired straight from the Uni, which is pretty awesome. CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!

And that's how it should be I think. Getting a little bit out of your comfort zone, socialising and making new friends.
I guess most of the international students (myself included) don't know anyone from the university they are going to.

Have you guys applied for the accommodation btw?
