Graduated. Now Confused about the future...
Dear all,
I have just finished a degree in history and did various short term volunteering roles (writing for a magazines, volunteering as a mentor, in a hospital, teaching english in a nursery abroad). I also worked in a nursery school.
Anyhow, I have no idea what I really want to do. I initially considered medicine, but to be honest, it would be expensive for me right now, so I need a plan for the next 2-3 years (to enable me to save and decide if I still want to be a doctor).
What really attracts me is working for a company. I like to feel part of something and do my bit to help it succeed (I also know that there are fast career progressions, so why not?)
Thing is, I can only think of accountancy and marketing/communication internships to help me get a foot in the door (not really into HR and IT). Yet, these are unpaid positions and last several months (though not more than 6). I need money obviously, but I am not experienced enough to get a paid position at this point in time. So would it be a sensible thing to do? Also, what if after the internship I decide I am not that fond of these positions? Wouldn't it be a waste? -
Re: Graduated. Now Confused about the future...If we're going to be picky then you shouldn't really use hyphens in place of commas in a sentence either. If you feel Confused about this, please consult your local junior school.(Original post by tufc)
Well, I'd say that if you haven't realised yet that 'confused' isn't even a noun - never mind a proper noun - then your fears are probably justified. -
Re: Graduated. Now Confused about the future...i am not good at them!(Original post by EMPStudent)
This is why I don't get why people study history and other similar subjects.
Study something useful like Enginnering, Sciences or law/economics etc.

Re: Graduated. Now Confused about the future...Not really, the skills and experience you would have learned would be great to take forward, plus you will have a reference. Even if after the 3-6 months you are fed up and never not want to step foot in that area again. Also, what if after the internship I decide I am not that fond of these positions? Wouldn't it be a waste?
You are looking at applying to study GEM, why not apply for healthcare jobs, HCA and so on, apply for all the typical graduate schemes. Apply for internship, hopeful paid some do pay -
Re: Graduated. Now Confused about the future...And if we're going to be extra picky, they're dashes, not hyphens. And there's no such rule - using dashes instead of commas to break up the flow of a sentence is perfectly acceptable, just as it is to start a sentence with 'And'.(Original post by M1011)

Re: Graduated. Now Confused about the future...Yet they are still hyphens, not dashes which are like so; '‒'. So if we are going to be extra, extra picky, you still can't substitute a comma for a hyphen. Also thanks for the information regarding the word 'and', albeit I don't fully understand how it is relevant to our conversation.(Original post by tufc)

Where on Earth are you getting your facts from? Granted, due to the text editor on TSR, what's meant to be a dash shows up as a hyphen; however there is no rule that says commas cannot be substituted by dashes. -
Re: Graduated. Now Confused about the future...I'm sorry, please read what you just said... I care not for the cause, what has appeared on this forum is a hyphen. That is where I'm getting my facts from. There is rules regarding the use of hyphens.(Original post by tufc)

Re: Graduated. Now Confused about the future...
Coming from a science person, I don't really get the whole "you're stupid if you don't do law, engineering or science thing"
I did science (firstly because I liked it) and secondly because physics is well respected in all industries. History is well respected in all industries, minus the ones where you actually need advanced maths - but if you had done chemistry/biology you would still be ruled out.
I have no intention to actually be a physicist or an engineer because there's more cash elsewhere, so the only real advantage is that I would be in a better place to get financial jobs where you need a lot of numeracy or even mathematics - but what proportion of the job market is that?!
(hoping I'm not going to get pulled into the hyphen/dash/comma debate for using a hyphen/dash) -
Re: Graduated. Now Confused about the future...What in the name of our lord Jesus is that THING in the middle of your sentence? I hope it's not a blooming hyphen!(Original post by fortransexual)
