Which daily newspaper would you recommend me?
Hi, I'm German and got into the London School of Economics. Although I am going to study mathematics, I am also highly interested in politics and current affairs. As I am going to move to London in October, I would love to inform myself a little more about British politics and society and would love to improve my English a little.
I cancelled the German newspaper I am used to read, because I now would like to subscribe a British daily newspaper. Which one would you recommend me? I know the Times, and I actually like it. But isn't it a little conservative? and how about the Independent? I also read some articles in it, and actually liked it, but it unfortunately seemed a little left-wing. Is there kind of a "centrist" newspaper? good quality, politically in the middle, neutrally written? how about the Guardian? have not had it yet.
thanks for any advice! -

The Times is probably your best bet.
Or anything but this.(Original post by dongonaeatu)

Re: Which daily newspaper would you recommend me?
The Times' editorial stance is Centre-Right at the moment and the Independent is Centre-Left. Those are the two papers that come to mind as being closest to the centre.
The Guardian is left, The Telegraph is right. The are the 4 main newspapers. As you are in London, I'd also recommend the Evening Standard when you're out and about on the streets. It has some pretty good content in it.
A lot of the other newspapers (The Sun, Daily Mail, Star, Mirror) are trashy tabloids or fairly sensational, maybe the Daily Mail less so but it still has a clear Right bias.
Of all the newspapers, I think The Times is the closest to the centre, but doesn't quite make it bang-on in the centre. -
Re: Which daily newspaper would you recommend me?
If you're looking for politically neutral and unbiased (or as close to that as possible), then its best to avoid the Guardian and the Daily Mail.
Edit: looks like I got negged by a left-wing Guardian reader

daily mail
The Times is very good. The Mail is really conservative, and while the Mail is right wing, not to the same extent, and is one of the most reputable papers for proper news. The Independent is centre-left. The Guardian is left wing.
I'd go for the Times or the Independent, or the Guardian. But go for whatever you like reading. Try the Independent and Guardian if you haven't before. Any of those three will put you in a good position. In short, avoid the Daily Mail like the plague (and other ones like the Sun too).Last edited by agoetcherian; 18-06-2012 at 16:35. -
Re: Which daily newspaper would you recommend me?The Times is definitely the best at the moment. The Guardian is for champagne socialists. I am sure you already do read it but make sure you catch the Economist each week(Original post by dustinsu15)

I try to balance it out by reading the economist as well.
I would suggest the times, but if you don't sign up to a long term contract you can always switch if you want to. -

Re: Which daily newspaper would you recommend me?
I really do not see why everyone hates the Daily Mail - I've got an Oxford offer and I read it, so I don't think the idea that "it's for idiots" holds much water (in fact that's a rather insulting and arrogant position to take) - like everything, I think you should take what you read with a pinch of salt, but those who have such a vehement reaction to the Daily Mail seem to me to be overreacting.

Re: Which daily newspaper would you recommend me?
Not the Daily Mail! Anything but that! Unless you're a Cheryl Cole-loving right-wing homophobe, that is. The Guardian is quite good but also rather political, so I'd go for the Independent if you're looking for a decent paper that's not trying to sway your political views! If you're not bothered at all, though, then go for the Guardian. I only recommend the Daily Mail for when you need something to burn in the winter.

Re: Which daily newspaper would you recommend me?
Depends if you are more left or right wing. The Times is a nice paper to read, and probably the best of the non-heavily biased ones. If you're left wing, read the guardian, if you're right wing- the Telegraph. I do like the Telegraph, though my one complaint it that it does tend to go off on one for relatively minor infringements of traditional Englishness, which can wear a little thin.

Re: Which daily newspaper would you recommend me?You want any broadsheet really. The best ones are the independent, or it's off-spring paper called 'i', or The Times.(Original post by dustinsu15)

The Times
The Daily Mail is ridiculous, and I think it's absurd to classify The Sun as a newspaper.
