Re: Music application 2013Hi there, you have loads of time to check this out and you don't need to worry about it yet, but take a look at the courses on UCAS and they'll tell you the grades you need. For the best universities you will probably need AAA-AAB. However if you are planning on music college you don't need good A levels at all as they value how you perform much more. The only thing is Music Tech is not always valued that highly by some of the more academic universities - are you planning on taking a fourth AS?(Original post by Just Declan)
If I had grade 8 in piano and guitar, what grades would i be looking at aiming for to get into a good university for a music course, I plan on taking Muisc, Music technology and Maths. I lso have extra curriculum activities like GSCE Latin and DoE Bronze if they would value that. Just finished first year of GCSEs. -
Re: Music application 2013What's your fourth AS Level likely to be?(Original post by Just Declan)
Thanks for the reply
I know Music Tech is not valued much but I really want to take that class so would it ever hinder my chances? I am taking a fourth as level as well and I plan on going to a university as opposed to a music college.

Re: Music application 2013Hmm, you might be OK then. Tbh to give yourself the best possible chance, you'd probably want to take whichever language to A2 and drop Music Tech after AS, I'm afraid(Original post by Just Declan)
I don't know, considering German, maybe Spanish?

Re: Music application 2013Not really(Original post by Just Declan)
Thanks for the advice but i;m sure i want to do music tech so i'll have to take the chance. I'm thinking of uploading some of my piano and maybe guitar compositions, if i were to get some recognition on Youtube would that help my chances towards securing a place?

Re: Music application 2013
Hi there!
I'm a clarinettist who's off to Birmingham Conservatoire in September. I applied to the RCM, BirmCons, RWCMD, Bath Spa, Surrey, Birmingham and Cardiff. If you have any questions (at all) about CUKAS (its a bit weird with references etc and don't forget the early deadline), just quote me and I'll try to help you
Best of luck for AS results!!

Re: Music application 2013
Hellooooooooo everyone!
I hope you are all happy with your results today
Just an advanced warning that I will be on holiday from 28th August - 16th September and won't be checking TSR. So anyone who would like their CUKAS statement reviewed in the PS Help forum (at the moment, I'm the only active Music reviewer), get your statements in sooner rather than later!

Re: Music application 2013
Hi there, hope everyone is getting on well with their applications and everything
I just have a couple of questions someone might be able to answer, particular if they have ever done an audition:
firstly, I'm a bit worried that things like my aural skills have never been that good. Some places mention they might feature in the audition - if so how much, and at what level?
Secondly, RAM says this: 'Major, minor (harmonic and melodic) extended scales (i.e. Start on the requested tonic and go up to top A, A sharp, B flat or B and down to D, D flat, C sharp or C and then back to the tonic) and their extended arpeggios, to be played from memory.' So they want me to essentially do longer scales. The thing is, this doesn't make sense for loads of the scales! For example, in Eb major, am I supposed to then go down to a D or C then back up?? And then going up, do I carry on to a top Bb say, even if that is the 6th degree of the scale, before coming back down? I'm going to ask my teacher but it all seems a bit weird! -
Re: Music application 2013Hi there! i'm off to conservatoire this year so have already done my auditions and everything! the only extended scales that i was ever asked were to a 12th, although some are compound 12ths (so 2 and a half octaves) If your looking at music college auditions, every place is a little bit different, i only auditioned for Birmingham, Trinity, RCM and RNCM. RCM do aural tests with you your audition, which were hard, and from what i understand, they weigh them quite highly when considering your application! Trinity do a separate aural test and essay section. Its all off a recording and you get to hear it several times. I was told that they make their decision after you play and then the aural test is just to decide how they would structure your lectures if you accept a place there(Original post by Tilly87)

my aural skills weren't amazing and i still got a place at Trinity so i wouldnt have thought they think its too important! I didnt have any sort of aural tests for the northern or for birmingham! although i do know that both places talk to your pianist as well to see how they think you coped with them too. hope this has helped! if you have any more questions, feel free to ask me

Re: Music application 2013as a warning, a friend of mine did what you are planning to do, and they didnt get any offers to do music at university, they've had to take their 4th AS as an A2 in their gap year just to get some offers and they're a fantastic pianist! Music Tech isn't really counted by a lot of Universities from what i've heard. Also uploading compositions to youtube, no matter how much recognition you get, isnt going to help your application one iota. Your probably better off carrying on all 4 AS levels to A2 or dropping music tech at A2 and carrying it on as a hobby!(Original post by Just Declan)

Re: Music application 2013hey thanks so much for getting back to me! that's really helpful. it's a good job I'm not applying to RCM then - my aural skills are hopeless! Glad to hear trinity are more relaxed about it as it seemed really nice there. Are you off to trinity this year then? Also I was wondering for the essays how scary they are, as it's been a while since I did any(Original post by savtrombone)

I did AS Music Technology and still got four offers and withdrew from the other University! I did Music, Maths and Physics alongside it and am now going to Bristol to study music in October(Original post by savtrombone)

As long as it is your fourth subject and you are doing three other 'academic' subjects then I should think you'll be fine for a vast majority of universities

Re: Music application 2013
Just to remind you all, I'm now a personal statement helper.
If you post your personal statement here: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=241 then I can have a look at it and review it for you. If you're worried about plagiarism - don't be. This subforum can only be seen by us PS helpers who have all shown ourselves to have completed A Levels/equivalents and have a confirmed place at Uni (or music college in my case). With the CUKAS deadline of October 1st, I would have thought all of you applying to conservatoires would be putting the finishing touches to your statements, so I'll try and help you make them even better!

Re: Music application 2013Hmm... If I would you, I would try and drop Music Tech as some Uni's don't count Music and Music Tech as separate A Levels. Do you know where you would like to apply as this may influence your decision??(Original post by Just Declan)

Re: Music application 2013I would like to go to a Russel group university but I really badly wat to do music technology.(Original post by beanstalkgirl_24)

Re: Music application 2013I know somebody going to Uni for Music Technology but they did Music Technology, Maths and Physics - Russell Group Universities will usually count Music/Music Technology as one subject unfortunately. You're safer dropping Music Technology rather than any of the others as quite a few people on Music Technology courses won't have done the A-level anyway as it's not offered at that many places!
