    Nursing applicants 2013 intake
I started a thread like this last year and found it very popular so thought I would start it again. This is really to help any potential nursing applicants for 2013 entry by providing any help to each other and helping each other through the long and difficult process ahead

    Good luck

Hey there I'm torn at the moment I want to do children's but places are so limited so Im thinking of applying for adult and then doing 18 month on top for children. Yes I am trying to get as much work experience as I can as its a must for nursing courses now. Got told that a lot of people have to apply 3 or 4 times for child nursing.

    where you looking to go?

Your going to be busy I know what you mean Im determined to be a children's nurse but its so difficult to get into so might go through adult and then do child. Yes hard work in the short term long term rewards im starting an access course at college so fitting that in with everything else is going to be hard work but totally worth it

I am looking to go to Edge Hill, Sheffield Hallam or Salford to do Learning Disabilities Nursing and Social Work, but am applying for Leeds and Hull for single Social Work. I know I want to work with those who are disabled as I have a lot of work experience in that area and have found it to be so rewarding.
I am looking to get work experience in a hospital and gain more experience with children in different social settings. I am also looking to volunteer within an elderly day care centre. I am trying to balance both health care and social care work experience. I have a lot of experience already but I want to stand out!

I will have my A-Levels in September and was going to go to uni to do a completely different subject - Media, Culture and Society to be exact and then decided to withdraw my application in favour of going to college to study Health and Social Care. If all goes well in August, on results day, I can apply to uni for 2013 then defer a year so I can finish my course at college.

Where are you looking to go Natasha?

    Sophie.

Good Luck! And yes always focus on the end result! I have had a lot of mix ups with knowing what I wanted to do. First it was a nurse back when I was little, then a psychologist, then a police officer, then a journalist, then a speech and language therapist, then to a teacher, then a journalist, then a linguist, back to a journalist, then rethought and wanted to be a police officer, decided against looked at social work and loved the idea and now think the same about working with disabled people so now looking into doing a degree in social work and learning disabilities nursing. So now really I have started where I began. But found what I really want to do along the way because I am so indecisive! I guess all the occupations above do involve helping people to some degree in different ways! I just hope I don't change my mind again!

    Phew!

    Sophie.

Somebody said to me to do the adult branch and then top up to child, but having worked with both adults and children has just proven that i enjoy and am better suited to childs nursing. And as a mature student i just want to do the 3 year course and start my career!

I didnt know it was possible to do LDN and SW together, sounds like a bloomin big undertaking lol! Yeah I'd make sure its def what you want as a future because from what I've heard you have to be committed or you'll hate it!
    Xx :-)

Yeah it is! (: good thing really! I am going to get a lot more work experience and I know it is what I want! And I am a committed person! (: xx I could have gone to university this year but I would have gone to do a degree in Media, Culture and Society. But now I have opted to go to college and do a H&S care qualification I feel I have a longer time to decide! I definitely know I want to help people and want to work with people who have disabilities! I dunno if you can do that! /: I might ask if you can cause then I can easily transfer between careers! (:

Yes I know just so hard to get onto but you proberly have a lot of commitment which will stand you in good stead just be warned you may not get in the first time average is 3 / 4 times good luck though. Have you got recent qualifications as you said you are a mature student ?

The drop out rate is 70% for some nurse courses so they are very picky.

I know I was contemplating LDN but extra cost of travelling etc might be too much for me

Im doing the open uni course which is 'an introduction to health and social care' so that will be my recent study to a level standard. Yes i have heard its a competitive course, im hoping that my experience will help me though; ive done community caring, am a personal paediatrix varer and work as an lsa in a school which caters for children with severe and complex needs. Ive also worked with vulnerable children for a very long time so have a good understanding of pallative care and rehabilitation methods. Fingers crossed that will be enough. I have heard that if you are unsuccessful in your child branch application, you may be offered a place on the adult course if you done well enough in your interview. Just habe to put heart and soul into it, cross fingers and see what happens!

Go for it! You seem to have a lot of experience, which will obviously benefit you! I'm finding it hard to get work experience with people who have learning disabilities. I suppose that's because it is a very vulnerable area. I am going to really try and get onto the LDN and SW courses cause I hate doing just one subject! But again fingers crossed! (:

I couldn't bear to do 3 years of adult and do 2 more years if I want to become a children's nurse.
