Just phone/e-mail your local pharmacies/hospitals - they're normally quite welcoming for someone to come visit.

I'm from Scotland. Every pharmacy I've emailed was keen to let me have some experience and my local hospital is allowing me to get some experience too. Just call and ask your local ones.

They're literally my local ones. I'm not getting paid, just popping over few days a week to get a feel/experience. Doing that in at my local hospital too.

so what do you do in the pharmacy/hospital?

do you just stand around and look at people who are doing the job? or do you have actual stuff to do?

Not necessarily, I did work experience in a community pharmacy before I started uni and they asked me to do things like put away the order and make up dosette boxes. Okay they're not the most exciting jobs but at least it is doing something.

I don't think you'd get a paid placement at this stage, a few will have already started.

Would hospitals be willing to offer international students placements though?

I was pretty sure unless your on a medicine counter assistant course or qualified it's illegal to make up dosette boxes (sort of says it in this link):

This does say that you can carry out some tasks as a Pharmacy student though but you weren't at the time and as far as I'm aware you also have to undertake a small bit of specific training for dosette boxes. I'm just really surprised that anyone would allow someone on work experience to do this.

If your currently doing the mPharm you should be able to do some of the things in a community pharmacy in hospital it will probably be watching. In my opinion anyway. Like other people have said it can't hurt to ask and ask as many places as you can.

Theres always independent pharmacies willing to take on MPharm students over the summer. You'll get some hands on experience with dispensing and all that fun stuff, most hospitals I know of have a set application procedure and after the deadline are not willing to take on further students.

I suppose it's up to the pharmacist. Obviously it wouldn't be a good idea to have an untrained member of staff doing boxes regularly but she collected the stock for me and it was probably checked by a technician too. It's always confused me that being a pharmacy student means you don't need to be trained, I didn't learn anything useful till third year.

This is coming up for 5 years ago so maybe things have changed, I know it's harder to get work experience in the first place now because of patient confidentiality. What specific training? I made up hundreds of boxes through uni and didn't do anything like that.

I rang every single pharmacy in my town and only one or two said we may gave u experience. It seemed so easy but it's not easy to find it.

Ah fair, I just was like hmm because I work at a pharmacy and I'm not trained to do trays (I fetch boxes for the dispensers when they're doing them but thats the most I have to do with it), it's more a covering there backs type thing. I think as a pharmacy student its different but if your a medicine counter assistant (like me, well in training stupid course that I will never have time to complete as they give me way to many things to do...), dispenser or technician I think you have to sign of a few SOP's and that general type thing, it's like you have to be trained for tills or labelling, it's easy but you have to have a tick box. I think procedures may have changed but I only started working a year ago so it may have been very different back then like you say.
When I was on work experience I think (as it was over a year ago and as I now work there being employed and work experience all merge into one slightly in my memory) I helped put away the order, give out some prescriptions, got taught how to label things up and the pharmacist set me tasks to find out about medicines and hypothetical problem situations e.g. dispensing medication to an elderly patient for eye ointment (or something like that can't remember specifics) where there eye was obviously infected but the script was not sighed even though they had another signed script with it for regular medication.

I think I started doing boxes properly as soon as I started working so it must just be signing SOPs. Although I suppose I wasn't officially a pharmacy student then either cos I started working in the June. It's hard to remember, I don't think it'd have been dodgy though. The pharmacist I did work experience with was very thorough, she went on to become area manager.

How will this information help you? Chances are she's not from the same place as you. Even if she is, do your own legwork and ring round the pharmacies yourself like everyone has said. You'll need to show a bit of initiative if you want to get placements.

Ive done exactly the same as her but for hospitals-independent pharmacies that have let her get a place-highly likely will let me as well .
