Planning to buy a Netbook; any recommendations?
Well, my laptop is quite heavy and I would like to buy a Netbook that could help me out with a quicky work editing using Latex; PDF viewing; PPT; Excel; etc, surfing the net, watch a bit of vids and if possible do a bit of programming e.g. Java or C#.
Any advice on getting a new Netbook? Never bought one really.
I'm planning to get the Asus 1025CE. Seems to be a good one.
Any advice and suggestions would be very grateful. -

That would be my recommendation. I would then save an extra tenner or so and get a 2GB RAM stick from www.crucial.com to significantly improve multitasking. That should run you back about £10, and once you have your laptop you can use their system scanner to get the best possible match.
Whatever you decide to buy, make sure it has an Atom N2800 or N2600 processor, virtually everything else is inferior in this price range.Last edited by Gofre; 19-06-2012 at 17:34. -

That would be my recommendation. I would then save an extra tenner or so and get a 4GB RAM stick from www.crucial.com to significantly improve multitasking. That should run you back about £20, and once you have your laptop you can use their system scanner to get the best possible match.
Whatever you decide to buy, make sure it has an Atom N2800 or N2600 processor, virtually everything else is inferior in this price range.
Would these Netbooks allow us to install Windows 7 e.g Ultimate? I read on the net that it could but not sure whether the source is correct or not. -
Re: Planning to buy a Netbook; any recommendations?Could you install it? Probably. Would it be wise to? Probably not. The reason netbooks ship with Starter edition is because they typically have issues coping with the demands of the other versions. You could probably go for Home Basic/Premium if you upgrade to the 4GB of RAM I suggested earlier (I've since read that Windows Starter Edition only supports 2GB of RAM, so upgrade to that and not 4GB if you don't install a new OS), but it may not be optimal. To be honest if you want features exclusive to Ultimate, you're probably better off buying a more robust computer anyway.(Original post by kka25)

Just saw some of the Netbooks physically today

The Asus 1025CE has three colors; blue, pink and purple and I really don't like any of the colors lol but what's great is that they come with 500GB HDD! Also, they have 2GB RAM, Camera Lock and USB 3.0.
There's another one that caught my eye: Toshiba NB520. Well other than the nice built in speaker, its HDD has this shock absorbent capabilities that really got me interested - but I'm not sure though how good it is in absorbing shocks. Also on the -ve side: just 250GB HDD, no USB 3.0, no lock for the camera and 1GB RAM which the all of these Asus would either doubled or has.
