I am a Tory and I would honestly prefer the UK to be more like Sweden. The left in the UK should be less elitist, centralist and authoritarian.

I've long said that Sweden is one of the most capitalist nations on earth, a quick trip to the economic freedom, and business freedom index's confirm that. The country isn't a "mixed economy" and it certainly isn't socialist. The only people that think so are clueless American Yuppie liberal who say "can't we be more like sweden/canada/europe" without a hint of irony.

Well They've got the smallest development gap (*Jeremey Clarkson voice* In the world) with 1% of the population only owning 14% of the nations wealth. Not to mention lovely furniture and girls. And the Hives... how could we forget

Proud to be 4 (%ish) Swedish

Are you saying that mixed economy and business freedom do not work together? Scandinavian countries certainly changed a lot from 80s, but http://www.sweden.gov.se/sb/d/2106/a/19792 . What changed is state is more oriented to quality and efficiency and not quantity.

And still, Scandinavian countries are phenomenal. Little or no regulations for ordinary sectors and sensible regulations for sectors which are backbone of economy.

The funny part about that is the fact that Sweden has an amazing welfare system.

Sweden is just proof that mixed economies work. What's that? Free Market? How can a country be a Free Market economy if the Government imposes a 25% Sales Tax and a very steep Income Tax (Rich people paying nearly 60%) If we are going to politicise the issue it terms of left and right, then since when was the right in favour of such high taxes? The Republicans in the US would start a second Civil War if taxes even went up by 5% and Ayn Rand would have a fit at the very thought.
And where does such tax-money go, which by the way, is at a hefty 50% of the Government's revenue? Maintaining a social service that actually works. In other words, the Swedish government doesn't aim towards alleviating the richest in the home that the poorest follow, but instead alleviating the poorest thus making sure that the richest can benefit from one of the resourceful and talented populace in Europe.

Some people just don't understand you can have a (crumbling, BTW, especially in Malmo and Umea) welfare system and be a big capitalist country.

The first secret of success with Sweden isn't really rocket science and it is so often forgotten in Britain including your PM

Governments there do things with a long term focus and not just to win an election.

Also as wonderful as their system is it isn't without its short-comings and trying to implement anything a different country does in Britain won't be easy unless it is done wholesale.

One thing for sure, I'd cringe at the thought of what would happen if ever UK had Swedish levels of social welfare benefits.... it'd become the benefit scroungers capital of the world.

89% of people in Sweden speak English to a good degree.

And Swedish isn't hard to learn either! (A LOT easier than French and German)

I hear the immigrants are raping all the Swedish women

"Sweden has the highest incidence of reported rapes in Europe and one of the highest in the world."

"there is a correlation between the sharp increase of immigrants from Africa and the Middle-East into Sweden and the rise in reported rapes"

"immigrants in Sweden are several times more likely to commit rape as opposed to a native Swede"

53.2/100,000 rape rate in Sweden in 2009

Ive also heard that alot of these immigrants, paticularly the north africans are very violent.

Sweden also treats rape very seriously. Countries with the supposed 'lowest' rates of rape tend to be very repressive towards women and rape cases go ignored. Sweden is also progressive and takes marital rape seriously which is still overlooked in most countries. Women in Sweden feel more able to report rape as opposed to a woman in Pakistan. So obviously rape figures are going to be higher in Sweden. Actual figures for rape in the UK far excede the figures that are actually reported. Maybe if every single rape case was reported in this country we would soon see ourselves right at the top of the league table for rapes per 100,000 people.

Where are quoting from? Where your facts? Simply putting quotation marks around outlandish statements doesn't make them true.
