Welcome to the University of Lincoln forum: where prospective and current students can discuss anything about Lincoln.

Lincoln University Snow Sports Team (LUSST) 12/13
We don't mess about. We're the biggest and most active team at Lincoln, and proud of it. We have huge socials, amazing trips, and a crazy amount of like-minded people ready to have fun!
I'm Nick and I'm this years President for the Lincoln University Snow Sports Team. Just wanted to let you know a bit about what we do, and hopefully persuade you to think about joining the team when you head over to Lincoln in September!
LUSST has been running for the better part of a decade, and will celebrate its 10th Anniversairy in 2013. The team has grown rapidly over the last 3 years, and last year became the biggest team within the university with over 180 fully fledged members.
LUSST is packed with skiers and snowboarders eager to go play in the snow.. we hold weekly socials, bi-weekly trips to Xscape Castleford, monthly freestyle nights, and have a NEW YEARS ski trip to a big mountain resort (location tbc). Last year, 80 of us headed out to Tignes in the French Alps over NYE, and last year was also the first year that we were able to also run an Easter ski trip, where we all headed out to the French resort of Alpe D'Huez.
We welcome all freshers, 2nd and 3rd years, all levels of ability. So whether you've never done it before, or are a keen enthusiast - you're all welcome to join! We have members that purely come for the social side of the team.
★★★ SOCIALS 12/13 ★★★
We consider ourselves to be one of the friendlier and more social teams at the uni, being one of the few teams that hosts socials every week without fail. We usually go out every Monday (may change this year) night with the whole team, first meeting up in a bar with our own VIP area, before moving on to one of Lincoln’s nightclubs for even more sweet deals. You’ll never forget a night out with LUSST, (unless you drink too much).
For our first official social of the 12/13 year, we’ll be having a meet and greet early on, probably straight after freshers week, so if you aren’t sure about joining, apologise to your liver and come along to get to know everyone and find out a bit more about the team.
★★★ XSCAPE 12/13 ★★★
No previous experience is required, it doesn't matter if you've never skied or snowboarded before, heck it doesn't even matter if you've never seen snow before! You can still join the team and start from scratch with some lessons at Xscape. As long as you can understand that sliding down a snowy hill is fun then you’re pretty much sorted, and if you start learning tricks, well, you’re in for a hell of a rush
However, for those of you with a few years under your salopettes, get your butt on the coach to one of our bi-weekly Xscape trips as you could well be the new blood we need in the freestyle and/or slalom teams. After all, graduation means that every year we lose some of our best.
Every other Wednesday we head up north to Castleford’s 200m indoor snow slope, where you can learn to ski or snowboard, or simply come along for a recreational session.
Pricing is still to be confirmed for the 12/13 season, but check out the info tab on our Facebook for a better idea.
★★★ ANNUAL TRIP 12/13 ★★★
Every year, LUSST organises an amazing week long trip to somewhere in the alps. This year we'll be heading out to ski resort (location tbc) with Off The Piste (OTP) who take tens of thousands of students to resorts all over the alps every year. We’ll be setting off from Lincoln on 29th December, arriving on the afternoon of 30th, and returning to Lincoln on the 6th January.
LUSST is infamous for snapping up the ‘Event of the Year’ award at the sports and societies awards.
This year's holiday is definitely not to be missed.
Videos of last years holidays can be found in our Facebook profile info section (check my profile on here for the link).
★★★ HOW DO I JOIN? ★★★
If I've done a good enough job of persuading you that joining the team will be the best decision you could possibly make when you head up to Lincoln, then come along and see us at the Sports & Societies Fayre in Freshers week and get your name down to our mailing list and add our profile on Facebook! Full details with how to join will be explained in September, and can be found on the info section of our Facebook.
The link to our Facebook can be found in my profile, or just search "Lincoln SnowSports".
Any questions, fire away!Last edited by Lincoln Snow; 20-07-2012 at 22:05. -
Re: Lincoln University Snow Sports Team (LUSST) 12/13
We have entered freestyle and racing competitions (BUISC) in previous years but it has never been particularly successful due to lack of interest and funding. Affiliating with the hosts and entering competitors is quite costly especially if only a few people are interested. For this reason we've been more of a recreational team for the last year, and this has worked out great as there's plenty of people that get involved just for a bit of fun.
We would consider entering BUISC again next year but it will depend entirely on the amount of interest we get in September. -
Re: Lincoln University Snow Sports Team (LUSST) 12/13
Definitely considering joining this! I love skiing, and became quite good, but it's not my mum's favourite holiday type so I haven't been in years!
This sounds like a fantastic opportunity for me!
Will Socials still be on a monday night, and what time, as I work mondays? And what are the timings usually for the XScape trips?
Thanks!

Re: Lincoln University Snow Sports Team (LUSST) 12/13
Hey Paris!
I know what you mean! I had wanted to go on a winter skiing/boarding holiday since I was young but my folks were always more into summer holidays so I didn't even get chance to learn until I came to Lincoln... and somehow, I'm now running the team and absolutely love it!
Socials have usually been on a Monday night in the past, put later on in the year this year we changed that to a Thursday night because the events on that night suited the team better. I can't say for definite what night the socials will be on as we have yet to meet up with bar/club owners to discuss discounts and deals for certain nights. But even if we end up having our socials on the same night every week, we always try to vary it a bit and do a fortnightly/monthly themed social (fancy dress usually) on a different night (sometimes on a Wednesday if we're not at Xscape that week). Socials usually start around 8:00-8:30pm in a predrinks bar (was usually Revs last year) before moving onto a nightclub at around 10:30-11:00pm depending on what state everyone is in
As for Xscape, we usually meet up in Tower Bar (the Students Union bar) at around 4:00pm every other Wednesday, and get back around 1:00am. This year we started holding monthly freestyle nights as well for those who are into doing a few tricks or hitting those giant airbags and they're usually held on a Thursday or Friday, starting at the same time and going on until around 2:30am (gruelling I know! but we're usually only on the slopes for 3 hours and go for a few drinks afterwards).
Hope that helped! Add us on facebook, the link can be found in my profile.Last edited by Lincoln Snow; 13-07-2012 at 18:04. -
Re: Lincoln University Snow Sports Team (LUSST) 12/13
That's brilliant!
I finish work at 9 on a monday, so i'm sure i'll be able to make some of the socials!
As for Xscape, it sounds like great fun! I do theatre wednesday nights, so I wouldn't be able to go every time, but I'll definitely try and balance them both out a bit so I can get the best of both worlds!
Really looking forward to finding out more about all of this, and meeting you all soon hopefully!

Re: Lincoln University Snow Sports Team (LUSST) 12/13
Great to hear Paris!
We currently have a hoodie and wristband design competition going on over on our Facebook page so if anybody fancies submitting a design you could be in with the chance of winning a free hoodie or Two Seasons voucher and have the whole team wearing your design all year! Find the details on our facebook (link can be found in my profile). -
Re: Lincoln University Snow Sports Team (LUSST) 12/13
Bit more info about the team and this year's annual trip!
Here's what we've got lined up for our members this year:
✔ Meet and Greet social for newbies
✔ Some crazy socials and fancy dress nights with favourites including: Superhero night, the infamous LUSST Halloween pub golf, Boarders vs Skiers, Christmas meal, St Paddy's reunion, UV nights and preholiday house parties
✔ Regular trips to Xscape Castleford's indoor 200m snow slope
✔ Monthly freestyle sessions at Cas with après ski in The Glass Room
✔ Two incredible, week long mountain holidays with sick skiing, sick après and sick nights out
✔ 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY!
✔ On The Pond summer reunion at Grendon Lakes with camping, wakeboarding, paintballing, bbqs and booze!
✔ And lots more!
Now some info about this year's annual holiday:
We cannot yet reveal where we'll be going on this year's snow sports winter trip (this will be announced at the Sports Fayre on Weds 19th Sept so make sure you come along and say hello!) but we can give you some awesome information that will hopefully get you hyped even without knowing where we're going!
I won't say too much about the resort as I might give it away, but I can say we've never been to this resort as a team before, so it'll hopefully be a new place for everyone to go.
The price is incredibly only £399 (if you've never been on a ski holiday before, that price is ridiculous for what's included, see below), we managed to get a great deal from the company taking us there, Off The Piste. We were quoted prices over £500 before negotiating for weeks to bring the price down, and for New Years! We'll be departing from Lincoln by coach at between 3-5pm on the 29th December, and returning in the late evening of the 6th January 2013. Every LUSST member, past and present is welcome to sign up for the trip, and trust me, it will be the best week of your life. We usually host a pre-holiday party at someone from the teams house. This is sure to be the biggest event of the year, and it's definitely advisable to get booked on as soon as possible because last year we sold out the trip before we'd even had our first trip to Xscape! We had to book another coach to fulfil all the extra demand, and although we'd like to say we can do the same this year, there are no guarantees if demand is too high! We also won the Sports & Societies award for 'Event of the Year' for our trip to Tignes last year, which is likely to make our trip even more desirable this year! The booking system is run on a first-come, first-serve basis.
£399 includes:
✔ Executive coach travel, there and back; pick ups from Lincoln (on campus), London (Chafford Hundred Train Station), and Dover.
✔ 6 nights self catered accommodation. The accomm is usually pretty shabby, but we don't spend much time there, it's a place to sleep.
✔ 6 day lift pass to the whole ski area (no upgrade required!).
✔ OTP wristband which allows discount entry to all clubs, and discount offers on plenty of drinks in all the places we go!
✔ Pre-departure holiday e-ticket. This tells you all the information about exactly what YOU have booked, what room you will be staying in, and who with, where you'll be picked up from, etc etc.
✔ Trip lanyard with info cards and insurance details.
✔ Fully trained reps with our group, travelling out with us from departure.
✔ All applicable resort taxes and VAT will be paid for us!
Unfortunately, though this price seems too good to be true, extras such as ski/board hire will cost you, but you can be assured that this will still be one of the cheapest ski holidays you'll ever go on!
A few more little interesting facts:
We'll be crossing the channel with P&O ferries, so get out there, take in a little sea air, and stretch those legs, going to be one LLOONNGG haul! Remember, no excise duty taxes, so the insane prices on booze need to be taken advantage of here, last year it was £10 for a crate of 24 cans lads, I bought two
. Ladies, bottles of spirits are usually pretty cheap, but it's usually more advisable to wait until we get to resort as spirits are usually much cheaper there.
We'll have an OTP rep with us on the coach from the pickup point in Lincoln (and also an OTP rep with us at the Sports Fayre at our stall in September, for those who have any questions (these guys will be able to tell you everything you need to know about the trip, and are very persuasive, trust me you'll be dying to come on the trip after talking to one of these guys!). The rep we have with us on the coach journey there will explain all the fine details of the trip, for example how to get your rental gear, and how to get the most out of the amazing trip!
On top of this, we'll have a holiday presentation night a few weeks before the final payment deadline, which will be compulsory for everyone booked on, and advisable for anybody thinking of booking on. We'll have an OTP rep with us there who will help the committee to give you all the details you may need for the trip, including all the extra activities and options, and most importantly, nights out! After this we'll have a team social at a local bar, hopefully with the rep joining us to get to know everyone, and for any unanswered questions!
On the holiday, the committee are happy to spend the first day taking less experienced boarders and skiers around the beginner slopes and show them the ropes! So if anybody was thinking of joining but unsure about going on the holiday because of lack of experience, don't worry, you'll be well looked after!
If this still isn't enough to convince you to at least come and check out one of our socials in September, take a look at a few of our testimonials from past and present members of the team:
“I can’t really imagine how uni would have been without LUSST. No doubt dull by comparison. There are literally hundreds of unbelievable memories (one including a rather photogenic swan) and I’ve made some of my best friends thanks to the team. I really can’t recommend it enough.”
“My first year in LUSST was beyond incredible! A year full of top class nights out and two awesome holidays. As a 2nd year the only thing I regret is not joining in my first year!”
“Joining snow sports was undoubtedly the best decision I made in my first year of uni. Learning an amazing sport while meeting a bunch of people who genuinely want you there and will support you all the way, awesome socials with awesome people what more can I say.”
“Lincoln Snow Sports Team made my first year at University, giving me a load of stories to tell, memories to treasure and friends that will be in my life long after I leave University. I cannot wait for next year!”
“Joining LUSST is the best thing I’ve done at uni and regret not joining in first year! I’ve learnt to ski for the first time and met so many good friends and felt so much more involved! Not to mention getting to go on holiday with 78 people!”
You know it makes sense people!Last edited by Lincoln Snow; 27-07-2012 at 00:46. -

That's not a problem at all! Every year we get loads of members who have never skied or snowboarded before, and we can happily sort them out with beginner lessons at one of our Xscape trips

Make sure you come check out our stall at the Sports Fayre on Weds 19th Sept! -

I really wanted to join but thought that as I couldn't ski of snowboard I wouldn't be able too.. I've always wanted to snowboard but I never it a chance to do it
How much does the membership cost per year for the Snowsports society? Also how much are lessons roughy?

Re: Lincoln University Snow Sports Team (LUSST) 12/13
I don't blame you, it's good fun :P
Membership is £40 for the whole year and covers your insurance, coach travel and makes you a member for the full academic year.
Last year lessons were £100 in total for 6 hours worth (prices subject to change for this year). That may sound expensive, as each person taking lessons needs to complete 4 levels of techniques (1.5 hours per level, 2 levels per trip, so £50 per trip), but once you've learnt all you'll need to pay for is slope time for recreational sessions from then onwards (last year this was £20 for 3 hours slope time).
To make that more simple, on your first trip, you will pay £50 for 3 hours of lessons, covering technique levels 1 and 2, and on your second trip, you will pay £50 for 3 hours of lessons, covering technique levels 3 and 4. Therefore 6 hours total, and £100 total. Then any further trips you choose to attend (subject to availability) are £20 for 3 hours of recreational time.
But again, these prices may be slightly different this year, but we will try our best to negotiate the same or better deals for next year. -
It all sounds so good! I just don't know which one to pick, skiing or snowboarding?! Haha :-P(Original post by Lincoln Snow)

Re: Lincoln University Snow Sports Team (LUSST) 12/13
Well skiing is easier to learn but harder to master, and likewise, snowboarding is harder to learn but easier to master.
You tend to fall over a lot more while learning to snowboard so it can get pretty frustrating if you don't pick it up right away but once you've picked up the technique it gets pretty easy.
You could always add our Ski and Snowboard Captains on facebook and see who can convince you the best? :P
Facebook link is in our profile. -
One of my friends is selling a load of his snowboarding gear so snowboarding is appealing too me, and I always think it looks more fun :-p.. How long on average does it take someone to learn how to snowboard at xscape? Also i won't be the only person learning how to snowboard with the society will I?(Original post by Lincoln Snow)

Re: Lincoln University Snow Sports Team (LUSST) 12/13
I can't comment on how fun skiing is because I'm a snowboarder :P but I can tell you snowboarding is great fun, bit more painful to learn as I say but worth it once you get the hang of it.
To complete all your lessons it will be 6 hours (2 xscape trips), then after that you'll be mountain-ready, though obviously the more trips you attend, the better you'll get, it just takes practice.
You won't be learning on your own, we can set up lessons all year round, and the first few Xscape trips tend to have the most learners together. It's normally around 10-15 doing boarding and a little bit less for skiing, around 5-10 each trip.
The best thing to do would be to come to our first social and try to find some people that are going to be learning so you'll know a few people doing lessons. -
Re: Lincoln University Snow Sports Team (LUSST) 12/13
I'm really tempted by this! But I'm a 2nd year.
I didn't really join any societies in 1st year, the only regret I have really! I've never touched skis or a snowboard in my life and know I'll fall over at least a hundred times...
Is there an option for hiring equipment for the lessons (and how much is it?)
Thaaaanks! -
