Should I complain?
Basically,
I took my OCR Gateway Chemistry exam last week, I revised really hard for it and was really pleased with how it went.
Now, it has just come to my attention today via. friends that a boy in my class (who I used to sit next to, and he used to copy me ALL the time, and never did any of his own work) has been saying that he copied my answers to at least two of the questions in this chemistry exam.
This is perfectly feasible as he was sat just across the aisle from me, (on my left hand side, I'm right handed) and was next to the wall, with no invigilators around, but I don't know whether to complain or not.
Please note, that this is an almost universally disliked, chronically lazy, rude, arrogant boy who does little to no revision and isn't predicted very high grades.
It really upsets me that I worked so hard for this exam, and now he is possibly set to get a better grade because of the work that I put in.
But then again, I don't want to stir up a whole lot of trouble and be forever known as 'the girl who snitched on so-and-so'
Can anyone advise me on what to do?

Re: Should I complain?
If they see you have identical answers you could both be disqualified.
I'm not sure if this means you should mention it or not - they can't prove who copied who, so they can't disqualify him and not you - but don't worry about snitching if it comes to that - it may be worth asking a teacher's advice who you really trust, this is your life he could be ruining.Last edited by Octohedral; 19-06-2012 at 18:00. -
Re: Should I complain?
Did he tell you via text or facebook? If you say something with no proof there's nothing they can do as the exam has finished now so there's not really much they can do. If you have any more exams with him sat near you keep an eye on him and report him then, it's not fair you've done for some one to use your hard work.

Re: Should I complain? It's a hard one to prove after the event. If he has been so stupid as to claim he did this in writing then it's worth reporting. If not, think about whether it really is feasible - was he on your non-writing side (i.e. your left hand side if you are right handed)? Did the people behind you see anything? You could speak to the exams officer with your suspicions and leave them to investigate - they can check with the people behind you. He won't know where the allegation come from.(Original post by Prettygeek)

The invigilators really should have noticed - in my experience it is really easy to spot candidates with wandering eyes (though obviously if they're so good we don't notice we don't know we missed them). In most year groups there are one or 2 we keep a special watch on because we are suspicious of them - anything more than a little bit suspicious and we put them where they can't cheat (it saves hours of work going through the malpractice procedures). -
Re: Should I complain?
To be honest, he's probably lying. It'd be fairly difficult to keep looking at your paper and copy enough down to get marks without an invigilator spotting.
Secondly, chances are that he scored a couple more marks at best. If you're really worried, mention it to a teacher that you can trust and see what they think. Personally I'd curse silently and hope it comes back to bite him in the ass. If he's lazy and does little work, what are the chances he'll ever be competing with you for anything? -
Re: Should I complain?I would say leave it, once he hits college or any further, where it will be much harder for him to copy, he'll get his rewards for not revising properly.(Original post by Prettygeek)

Yeah, he sounds stupid. Go to his Facebook wall and post "Did you copy me in this test LOL?" and if he says "yes", take a screenshot save it and you have evidence to suggest he did cheat. It sounds easy but in practise it may be hard.

I agree with the two of you here and really saying that you should report one way or another. It doesn't matter if you're called the "Girl who snitched" for the rest of your life when YOU'RE the one being blamed, disqualified and facing consequences for something you didn't do.
It would've been fine to breathe deep and let it go if it wasn't such important an exam but if you're DISQUALIFIED....
Really? Can you handle that term knowing you could've just reported it and saved yourself the trouble?
This is what I would do because I work my ass off for the medical aspiration I have. If I get disqualified for something like this, I'd both be furious and devastated. I wouldn't be able to live with myself.
...Think hard but fast. You can't let this go too late. -

Re: Should I complain?Exactly. All factors that could affect you are covered.(Original post by JamalAhmed)

It'd be checkmate if he denies it and you show proof. However, he can simply say he lied about copying - but they, the board, will be able to see how identical the answers are...
He won't win. -

Re: Should I complain?
I think you should. I know those types of guys and I had to sit with them a lot, Infact it was on in year 11 that I was actually able to sit somewhere where I knew a guy wouldn't copy the work I did.
If he didn't put the effort in and decided to cheat, which is against the rules, he doesn't deserve to get a good grade in chemistry. You did well by revising because it's clear you care about your education but he didn't so why does he deserve to get a good grade for something he didn't even work hard for? -
Re: Should I complain?
It's unlikely that they will notice that the answers are the same, due to the random allocation of scripts during marking. However, I would have quite a angry personal go at the person for putting you in a position of jeopardy, and for the unfairness of cheating in a national exam.

Re: Should I complain?
I would confront him about it and see what his reaction is. Ultimately, there usually has to be strong evidence for the board to take any action, but that doesn't mean you can't raise the issue yourself with him. Ask him whether he is going to live a life of a lie? Whether he will depend on others for his life? See what his reaction is. IF you have strong enough evidence then go to the exams officer and tell your peers and teachers about it. Let others know what a cheat he is.

Re: Should I complain?
Thanks everyone for your answers!! I have decided not to complain because the questions he copied were right at the beginning of the exam, and were probably the easiest ones. Also, one was multiple choice, so most people would have written the same thing. I will speak to him about it, but I'm not going to make a fuss
