HELP! I'm really stuck what degree to do!!
I can't decide at all. I really love English and I really love History. I thought then that I'd want to do a degree in English and History. But the more I look into it, the English and History courses tend to be based around modern history. I on the other hand am far more interested in Ancient History. Which leaves me at a bit of a conundrum as theres so few degrees that allow me to do both Ancient History and English. This has got me thinking that maybe I want to do Ancient History instead, but I'm a little reluctant to apply for this as I have very little knowledge of Greek and Latin, and also I'd hate to go into a degree that I don't actually know so well. Plus, I really don't want to leave English behind. Its very frustrating and I don't know what to do! Help anyone?

Nobody can decide for you!
What's clear is you are being put off the subject you like because of the lack of availability, but if you look into university courses more specifically you will find that a lot of univerisites have a huge range of modules.
For example for English and history and York, taking the first year for example, you can choose between modern history and ancient history.

Just look into really specific courses. Make sure you really search well too, there will be so many courses you miss out because they just don't show up when you google them or when you go through websites at first.
If I was you I'd probably just settle for modern history if I was that desperate to do English as well. -

Re: HELP! I'm really stuck what degree to do!!
Hiya, i was in a similar position to you last year. I've always wanted to do an English degree, but also love history, so for ages was looking at History and English. However after speaking to lots of people who have done joint honours, i eventually settled on just history; this is due to a realisation after my AS year that english slightly gets on my nerves ( sometimes a bit too tenuous), and that the people who had done joint said it was almost like doing two degrees, and was tricky making the transition between the two. At the end of the day, you need to go for what you would enjoy the most, if that's ancient history... go for it!

Just to add my two cents, you don't need knowledge of Latin and Greek to do a course in ancient History. Someone who was in my A level History class and did Classical Civilization A level but no ancient languages has gone to do Ancient History at Manchester and seems to be coping fine.

Re: HELP! I'm really stuck what degree to do!!
You could always look at the unis offering the specific course you want to see if you like them, if you do then apply to them. If there aren't 5 unis you like offering the course then you could always apply to less than 5 and add the extra ones in later for English/Ancient History/English and Modern History if you don't get 2 offers to firm and insure. But if you do then you don't have to make that decision.
