B465 - Politics Education Bill (Second Reading)
B465 - Politics Education Bill, MacCuishy

    Politics Education Act 2012

A Bill to educate Secondary School students about Politics and help them to make an informed decision on who they vote for by the time they are 16

    Part I: Changing Curriculum
    1 PHSE Lessons
    (1) All compulsory Politics Education shall take place during timetabled PHSE lessons in state schools
    (a) These will take place at KS3 and KS4 level
    (b) Lessons shall centre on politics and parties in the UK

    2 Key Stage 3
    (1) It will be compulsory for schools to teach students about basic Politics for a term at some point during KS3
    (a) This must be for a minimum of 12 weeks over the course of KS3

    3 GCSE Level
    (1) State schools will be presented with the option of offering their students a Politics GCSE.
    (2) Furthermore, 12 weeks of compulsory Politics education will also take place in Y11

Part II: Commencement, Extent, Short Title etc
    4 Short Title
    (1) This Act may be cited as the Politics Education Act 2012

    5 Extent
    (1) This bill shall extend to England; and

    6 Commencement
    (1) Shall come into force on the 3rd September 2013 following Royal Assent

NotesLessons will look at all idealogys from the political spectrum whilst teaching remains impartial and neutral, allowing pupils to make their own mind up. Pupils will be encouraged to debate in and out of lessons using the skills they have learnt.

The details of the compulsory curriculum, including subject depth and specific areas taught, will be designed and decided upon by the Secretary of State for Education.

The Department of Education will also work with exam boards in creating a interesting yet challenging GCSE, however, this course will only be made available to students 1 year after the introduction of compulsory education in order for an in depth course to be created

I agree with this now it has been incorporated into PHSE. Just to be a pedant, idealogys is 'ideologies'.

Aye, apart from Birchington's comment above about the plural of 'ideology'.

No. Is it really only me that thinks "teaching politics" sounds a bit 1960s China? Besides, Citizenship already involves a lot of politics, it just bores people and exposes them to whatever biases the teachers hold.

And we're being very insular. Guys, we are clearly all interested in politics, why are we trying to inflict our interest onto everyone else?

Instead of politics I think it would be better teaching political philosophy. Teaching people about 'politics' almost certainly means exposing them to teachers party bias, so I think it would be more productive to teach in a way which would allow pupils to discuss the role of government in general rather than which party happens to be most popular in the news that week. That I think would lead to a more informed electorate, teaching about current politics and parties will merely lead to a more polarised electorate.

No; in KS4 people don't have PSHE lessons, just Citizenship and Wellbeing.

This does not require such extreme measures as are being put forward. An hour a week of PHSE, of which politics is part of the curriculum, during years 7-8, would suffice.

Different schools have different stuff. My school has form time for half an hour per day which is where PHSE is taught.

Then why not replace Citizenship/Wellbeing/PSHE lessons with Politics?

Citizenship only came into education after I started my GCSEs that means I am part of an entire generation that hasn't done citizenship. We are the lost generation the ones that cannot function in society.

Right, so you want me to incorporate the compulsory Politics into Citizenship? Third Reading?
