My main criterion was that it had to be located south of the M4 - I didn't want to catch any diseases.

Re: What do you consider when choosing the University?
For me university was all about a learning adventure.

I want to move away for independence, so that was a crucial factor. I also wanted somewhere reasonably well respected, but realistic for my grades, so maximising my potential.

Where it was was also important for me. I'm not a fan of huge cities so that kind of kills a lot for me, but the middle of nowhere isn't exactly ideal.

Fees, I couldn't care less about, if my degree gets me a job on over 21.5k I'll be more than content and more than happy to pay it back, they could charge 18k for all I care (Although as a whole, I believe education should never be set back for people by economic barriers).

As for things like friends going, I couldn't care less. It's a huge decision and I'm not going to follow my friends in the hope that they stay in contact there with me to make things a bit easier. You make friends there, meet people and start a life there, why would I want to follow my friends? If they happen to be going though, great!

Finally it was about the course, I went to some open days and it seemed terrible, poorly put together and the teachers didn't really sell it to me. Others I went to sounded amazing, I felt like packing my bags and moving in there and then. That's pretty detailed but that's my choice.

Correct distance from home... Wasn't going to take 2 days for me to get back home but otoh wouldn't have my mum popping in for tea every week.

I went for the one that just felt right when I was stood on campus.
Although that was after checking league tables, reading what previous students had found the experience and the offer I received.

I looked at the course, facilities, layout + appearance of the campus and its buildings, the students' union, accommodation, local area, proximity to everything and distance from home.

    I would say reputation.

Going to oxbridge would be a lot more appealing than going to universities lower down in rankings, which are still excellent schools. Do you get what i'm saying.

Of course we would consider other factors like area, course, place. But reputation probably plays a big part in our decision naturally.

p.s. i've still got some time before i make my decision so my view probably doesn't amount to much.

Even if i had the type of grades they were asking for, id have no urge to go to oxbridge.

For me, it was all about location, want to leave london, but being a city boy, i wanted to leave for another city. Im studying psychology so reputation wasnt so much of an issue as long as my course what BPS accredited which is was.

    Why not oxbridge?

I know it's oxbridge but since you only have to apply for either cambridge or oxford and not both, surely it's worth taking a risk by applying to one?

I'm still applying for oxbridge mainly because i can fall back on other options if it fails, but the rewards are worth the risk of applying.

They're not saying they wouldn't want to go because it's a risky choice, they're saying they wouldn't want to go there at all.

I think it's important to visit the uni - if you are even vaguely considering somewhere try and get on an open day. And if for some reason you can't make a specific date, give the Admissions office a call and they may be able to arrange an individual tour for you. Sometimes a place will just feel right. I went to one university open day and on paper this place ticked all the boxes and I was pretty set on going there, but when I was wandering around I just couldn't picture myself living there. Still don't know what it was that put me off, but have never regretted my decision to go elsewhere. Also it's worth checking methods of assessment as well as course content - if you are the type of person who hates exams and are applying to a course which hangs everything on one set of final exams, then it may cost you a degree classification.

When I was selecting a short-list, I went mostly on reputation, league tables and high entry requirements.
But I went to visit 4 of them, absolutely loved 2 of them, cities, university itself, everything and they are both now my firm and insurance, whilst the other 2, one was a disappointment when I visited so rejected them and the other I loved the university but wasn't a fan of the city, so didn't apply.
I think the visits are the most important bit (at least for me) as the university may look absolutely lovely on paper or online, but you need to get a feel of the place and the surroundings.

I started off getting prospectuses sent in the post of 'good' unis. Suspect some of that choice was directed by my head of sixth form. Then in the summer of lower sixth, went to open days. I decided that I wanted to study in London, and then the choice was between kings and lse.

Fees weren't a consideration back then (in the days when they were £1000 a year), and eventually, I went with kcl partly because I liked the feel if it, and partly because the offer was lower (aab to lse's aaa) and I was worried about my economics.

First of all reputation and whether I like the course. Second of all, if I like the place where it is, i.e. its not too expensive nor is it too boring, its aesthetically pleased etc.

I'd never choose a uni just because it was cheaper to do a certain course... Thats kinda going against the point!

Re: What do you consider when choosing the University?
Location was first. Preferably I wanted to be somewhere close to the countryside and not in a huge city. After that I thought about reputation, but only quite broadly, I didn't look that much into the league tables.

In the end it worked out quite well. With my A level grades I could have got into a marginally better university, however I wouldn't change it for the world. Remember that you have to live at wherever you go for three years, possibly more. League tables and reputation change, location however, does not.
