Smashing a rented moped in Thailand, stitches in crotchOkay this will be a quick post just to warn people against renting a moped abroad.
I rented a moped on Koh Tao island in Thailand, and smashed into a deep storm drain, totaling the bike. This seems all too common - i've met so many people who have done the same. When we checked the bikes, they'd been rigged to fall over easily, to make sure that farangs damage them. I was charged 15,500 baht - 310 pounds or so, which seemed fair considering the damage. Still, this post is to basically say - do not rent a bike in Thailand (especially if you don't know how to ride one like me). It'll cost you big time!
