Proofreading / Editing / Publishing Experience
Hi, I am currently looking for some work experience in proofreading / editing / publishing this summer (ridiculously competitive I know!) and would appreciate it if someone could read over the covering letter I have just written and am about to send to various book publishing companies in the next week or so. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I want it to sound good without being cliche.
Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is ... and I am writing to enquire into the possibility of an unpaid period of work experience at Bloomsbury anytime between the 10th July 2012 – 10th September 2012.
I am very interested in the publishing industry and have continued my love of English Literature to degree level which I have found very engaging over the last couple of years in particular.
During my A Levels I worked as a volunteer at Oxfam Bookshop where my job role not only involved serving customers at the till but also organizing the stock and displaying books on shelves. I have gained considerable retail experience since then and have worked for over 4 years in various companies part-time whilst completing my A Levels and my degree. However, since working at Oxfam Bookshop, I would like to experience what it is like to actually be a part of some of the processes that involve book production and I now believe it is time to gain some work experience in the sector I plan to work in once I graduate and would be thrilled if the opportunity for a work experience placement at Bloomsbury were possible. Although my main interests lie in proofreading in editorial and organizing book signings in publicity I understand that working directly in any area of publishing is incredibly competitive and would therefore be happy to work in any area. If anything, I believe it will give me the opportunity to learn more about the areas I am not so familiar with but are equally important within the publishing industry.
I consider myself to be very perceptive which I believe is an important quality to have, especially in the publishing industry as attention to detail is key. I am a highly committed, enthusiastic and reliable person who possesses strong customer service skills because of my extensive experience in retail which I believe are skills for life and undoubtedly transferable into any work place. I have the ability to both listen and communicate effectively and am just as happy to work independently or as part of a team. I am very passionate about the possibility of a future career in publishing and will therefore take any role very seriously at Bloomsbury. Whilst working in the publishing industry requires a very professional stance, I believe working with books and the written word is also something to be thoroughly enjoyed.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and I look forward to hearing from you shortly. I have enclosed my CV as requested.
Regards,
