Re: investment bankingOh, that's nothing, just the equivalent of 'err', the thinking sound sort of thing. Still though, point stands, there's actually no top 100 per se.(Original post by elephantdon)

First of all I doubt there are even 100 IB firms in the UK, other than the mainstream bulge brackets there are perhaps a few dozen which specialise in particular markets...If I was asked to throw a number it would probably be in the ballpark of 40.
York does not particularly stand out from the crowd and although it is a very good uni...IB's want the cream of the education system and hence in my opinion at least your prospects will unfortunately be quite low unless you've got talent.
The main intake by the bulge brackets are from about 6 of the top unis (Oxbridge, LSE, UCL / Kings, Imperial, Warwick) give or take a couple which people always claim should / should not be on that list.
The boutiques and smaller firms will tend to widen their fishing net very slightly and perhaps consider the Top15 (pointless trying to list these) with first class honours.Last edited by freedomyak; 20-06-2012 at 18:37. -

Re: investment bankingBanking doesn't work quite like other professions such as law, where there are a large number of good quality firms (i.e. those names in the Legal 500) which you could just filter down based on what your personal sector preferences are, and which can operate with only a handful of staff. The very nature of banking, that it tends to be capital intensive (though worth noting small advisory boutiques don't require that) and staff-heavy, tends to mean you get fewer banks in a particular region than you would law firms.(Original post by elephantdon)

The upshot of this is that banks can be picky with who they take on. UoY isn't a bad Uni, but as many will agree there's more to life (and banking recruitment) than simply what Uni you went to, and what course you took. Work experience and extra-curricular activities are just as important.
To your question on compensation. It varies, based on the size of bank you work for, and the exact role you do. If you're working in the back office (google it) then your salary won't be as high as someone working in the front office (google it), where the starting salary can be anywhere between £45k to £50k. If you're working at a smaller boutique, then you might also take a salary hit, versus someone working in a bulge bracket bank (google it).
Hope that helps.

Re: investment bankingIf you include IB arms of commercial banks, brokers and boutiques, I could easily come up with over 50 with offices in UK(Original post by Hackett)
40? lol -
Re: investment bankingI was saying that 40 was far too low.(Original post by KLL)

Re: investment bankingso what is the lowest ranked ib(Original post by iSMark)
Who cares how many there are, you only need to get into one.
Starting salaries are about £45k but you also get a bonus, so quite a decent start. Living in London is expensive though, so you won't quite live like a king in your first year. -
Re: investment bankingAh, fair play(Original post by Hackett)
I was saying that 40 was far too low.
Only at the top IBs and some boutiques with graduate schemes etc. The vast majority will probably pay less, but they also make a much smaller % of hiring.(Original post by iSMark)

pick a measure. They're not comparable really... Its a bit like asking for the lowest ranked athlete in the Olympics without specifying a category.(Original post by elephantdon)

Re: investment bankingyou won't start on 50k thats ridiculous, more like between 30-40 and depending on where you work, i.e front or back office. I hope you don't value your spare time either as you it certainly isn't a 9-5(Original post by elephantdon)
