How easy is it to get a job?
I'm going to Brookes this year, and I'm going to need a job to support myself- my loan's just about good enough if I budget well, but I'm going to want to save some money at the same time. I'm just wandering how easy it is to get bar work or something else suitable for students in Oxford. Any ideas?
I'd really like to work in Boswell's but I guess that'd be day work, which isn't ideal. -

You will be surprised how much day time you get free. it will be better for u to work during the day than nights. Dependent on degree you could only be in class for 8hrs a week. And the last thing you want to do is be working bar shifts and have 9am class -
Re: How easy is it to get a job?I'm doing biology- got an unconditional offer as I'm on a gap year so I know I'm going to Brookes- so they reckon about 12 hours contact time a week. I'm just not sure about a shop/ other day work would be happy with not having me available on call during the week while I'm in lectures or the lab etc. But true enough about the late nights/ early morning thing. Working at the local Wetherspoons when having school last year taught me that.(Original post by Charlottay!)

Re: How easy is it to get a job?12 hours is rubbish for first year trust me, its more like 20-24, if you factor in lab based stuff and all that jazz. It was for my first year, the syllabus had changed a tad but not dramatically.(Original post by marky--mark)

I worked bar stuff in my second year, wasn't to bad you can get used it as you said, its often better paid then standard retail work for example.
If you are looking for bar work it will be fine there are loads of places you can get some in Oxford. -
Re: How easy is it to get a job?Yes given, it may be a struggle to get up for a 9am lecture, but most jobs wont be so accommodating of a weekly changing timetable that the life science students sometimes have. I was lucky as my job allowed for that as we did weekly rotas but on the whole bar work and getting up for a 9am lecture is a damn lot easier than getting up after a night out...(Original post by Charlottay!)

Re: How easy is it to get a job?
I'm going to Brookes in September as a mature student and plan on working as well. I've lived and worked there for 6 years though. Try dailyinfo.co.uk or gumtree or even ox.ac.uk, they normally have quite decent part time jobs, like admin or reception type roles. Money is far better as well
